Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "da'if" (weak) because Shu'ayb bin Maymun in it is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Shu'ayb bin Maymun was "mudtarib" (inconsistent) in narrating this report: sometimes he (Shu'ayb) narrates it from Husayn bin Abd al-Rahman, sometimes from "Abu Janab al-Kalbi Yahya bin Abi Hayyah" in place of Husayn (who is weak), and sometimes from Abu Janab directly from Abu Wa'il (without the intermediary al-Sha'bi).
Corroborating chains: Although Shu'ayb bin Maymun is not alone, since "al-Hasan bin Umarah" corroborated him (narrating it from al-Hakam bin Utaybah and Wasil bin Hayyan, from Abu Wa'il), the problem is that al-Hasan bin Umarah himself is "matruk" (one whose narration is abandoned). This narration is also reported from Ali through another chain (which will come under nos. 4749 and 4750), but that too is extremely feeble (wahin) and gives no cause for rejoicing at all.

Reference / Source: Al-Ajurri (1188, 1822), Ibn Adi (4/3) and Ibn Asakir (30/290) narrated it with the chain Shababah > Shu'ayb bin Maymun > Abu Janab al-Kalbi > al-Sha'bi.
Reference / Source: Bahshal in "Tarikh Wasit" (p. 184) and al-Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (2/224) narrated it through two routes via Shu'ayb bin Maymun > Abu Wa'il (without mentioning al-Sha'bi).
Reference / Source: Abu Bakr al-Qati'i in his additions to "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (622), Abu Talib al-Ushari in "Fada'il Abi Bakr" (19) and Ibn Asakir (30/289-290) narrated it via al-Hasan bin Umarah, who narrates from al-Hakam bin Utaybah and Wasil bin Hayyan, from Abu Wa'il.
Status of the narrator: Bear in mind that al-Hasan bin Umarah is "matruk" (abandoned).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (2/1078, 1340) narrated via Abd Allah bin Sab' (or Subay') that people said to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Appoint a successor over us." He said: "No! Rather, I will leave you in the state in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) left you." They said: "What will you say to your Lord when you come to Him?" He said: "I will say: O Allah, You kept me among them for as long as You willed, then You took me to Yourself while You remain among them; so if You will, set them right, and if You will, let them go astray."
Grading: Its chain can possibly be graded "hasan" because it contains Abd Allah bin Sab', who is one of the senior Successors, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat".
Details of the narration: The same meaning will come from Ali later under no. (4608) with these words: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not entrust us with any instruction regarding this leadership to be followed; rather, we decided it by our own judgement. Abu Bakr was made caliph, and he stood firm and was upright; then Umar was made caliph, and he too stood firm and was upright; then time showed its harshness." This narration is also "hasan" with this wording.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The last part of Ali's statement (Abu Bakr's excellence) is supported by the hadith of Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that has passed under no. (4470), in which he said: "Abu Bakr was our master, the best of us, and the most beloved of us to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Umar said this on the day of al-Saqifah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is also supported by the hadith of Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), which is in Abd Allah bin Ahmad's additions to "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (392), al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (13232) and Abu Nu'aym's "Fada'il al-Khulafa' al-Rashidin" (213). He said: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, the Muslims looked to see who was the best of them, and they made him (i.e. Abu Bakr) caliph."
Grading: Its chain with Abu Nu'aym is "sahih".
