Grading: The hadith is sahih, but in it the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed Bilal bin Rabah, telling him to put Abu Bakr forward to lead the prayer when its time came, not addressing Abu Bakr (as in the narration of Hammad bin Zayd from Abu Hazim).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It appears that the error here came from Sa'id bin Amir (al-Duba'i) or Ibrahim bin Marzuq (Ibn Dinar al-Basri), since they made some errors. Al-Tabarani (al-Kabir 5958) narrated it via Muhammad bin Abi Bakr al-Muqaddami and Sahl bin Uthman al-Kindi > Umar bin Ali al-Muqaddami > Abu Hazim > Sahl, and they did not mention this phrase (the address to Abu Bakr) at all, in agreement with the narration of Abu Hazim's other students besides Hammad bin Zayd.

Reference / Source: Ahmad (22816, 22817), Abu Dawud (941), al-Nasa'i (870) and Ibn Hibban (2261) recorded it via routes from Hammad bin Zayd; Ahmad (22817), Muslim (421) and al-Nasa'i (529, 1107) via Ubayd Allah bin Umar al-Umari; Ahmad (22848) via Hammad bin Salamah; Ahmad (22852), al-Bukhari (684), Muslim (421), Abu Dawud (940) and Ibn Hibban (2260) via Malik bin Anas; Ahmad (22863), al-Bukhari (1201, 1218) and Muslim (421) via Abd al-Aziz bin Abi Hazim; al-Bukhari (1234), Muslim (421) and al-Nasa'i (861) via Ya'qub bin Abd al-Rahman al-Qari; and al-Bukhari (2690) via Abu Ghassan Muhammad bin Mutarrif. All seven narrate it from Abu Hazim > Sahl bin Sa'd.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): None of them mentioned the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) command that Abu Bakr should lead, except in the narration of Hammad bin Zayd. In it the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed Bilal, telling him to put Abu Bakr forward if the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not come. Al-Bayhaqi (al-Sunan 3/123) said: "The address to Bilal is an addition (ziyadah) that Hammad bin Zayd preserved, and an addition from someone like him is accepted." We say: al-Muqaddami's narration with the author supports it, because the error here lies only in the address being to Abu Bakr himself, whereas in reality it was to Bilal.
