Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4503

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "After me, follow these two: Abu Bakr and Umar."

Grading: The hadith is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement in this chain over the mention of the mawla of Rib'i bin Hirash. It appears that his mention here, in the narration of al-Humaydi (Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr al-Asadi), is an "error". This is because this hadith is in Musnad al-Humaydi (449) in the transmission of Bishr bin Musa (from whom Abu Ali al-Sawwaf narrates, who was a careful narrator), and its chain does not mention the mawla. Likewise, a group narrated it from al-Humaydi without mentioning the mawla, including: Abu Hatim al-Razi (al-Ilal 2648), Muhammad bin al-Nu'man al-Maqdisi (al-Tahawi 1227), and Abu Yahya Abd Allah bin Abi Masarrah (al-Baghawi 3895).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, Abu Isma'il Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Tirmidhi narrated it from al-Humaydi (Ibn Abd al-Barr 2308) with mention of the mawla. There is no doubt that the narration of Abu Hatim al-Razi and those who corroborate him (and the narration of al-Sawwaf) is to be given precedence, because Abu Hatim is of great standing and those corroborating him are more numerous. Furthermore, all the narrators who narrated it from Sufyan bin Uyaynah other than al-Humaydi did not mention the mawla of Rib'i. This shows that it is not preserved at all in Sufyan's narration, and that its mention is "shadh" (anomalous).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here there is also another error in the chain: a narrator, "Za'idah bin Qudamah" (between Sufyan and Abd al-Malik), has dropped out. Sufyan bin Uyaynah used to commit tadlis in this hadith (as al-Tirmidhi 3662 M pointed out); sometimes he mentioned the intermediary Za'idah and sometimes he did not. But in al-Humaydi's narration Sufyan did not commit tadlis, since the mention of Za'idah is established in the Musnad (of al-Humaydi), and likewise in the narrations of Abu Hatim, Abu Isma'il al-Tirmidhi and others from al-Humaydi. Indeed, al-Humaydi mentioned (in Abu Hatim's narration) that Sufyan said to him: "I did not take it from Abd al-Malik; rather, Za'idah narrated it to us from Abd al-Malik." Although Sufyan heard a good number of hadiths from Abd al-Malik, what is preserved regarding this hadith is that he did not hear it from him, as he himself explicitly stated.
Important point: Furthermore, Sufyan bin Uyaynah has another teacher for this hadith, "Mis'ar bin Kidam", as will come in the next narration.

Important point: And other narrators (in Ibn Asakir). All of them (except Thabit bin Musa) limited themselves to following Abu Bakr and Umar.
