Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4479

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me and to Abu Bakr: "With one of you is Jibril and with the other is Mika'il, and Israfil is a mighty angel who is present in battle and stands in the ranks."
This hadith has an authentic chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Nu'aym: he is al-Fadl bin Dukayn. Mis'ar: he is Ibn Kidam. Abu 'Awn al-Thaqafi: he is Muhammad bin 'Ubayd Allah bin Sa'id. Abu Salih al-Hanafi: he is 'Abd al-Rahman bin Qays.
Reference / Source: Ahmad 2/ (1257) recorded it from Abu Nu'aym with this same chain. But he said: From 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), that it was said to 'Ali and Abu Bakr…
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is not explicit in attributing it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (raf'), but a statement like this has the ruling of "marfu'". Apparently al-Hakim here cited the wording of the narration of Khallad bin Yahya.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Khallad's explicit attribution to the Prophet was matched by Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri in al-Bazzar (729), and also by Ja'far bin 'Awn (as will come at no. 4704), and likewise by Sharik al-Nakha'i in Diya' al-Maqdisi's "al-Mukhtarah" 2/ (634).
