Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4461

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Habib bin Habib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he said to Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him): "Have you said anything about Abu Bakr? Recite it so that I may hear it too." He said: I recited: "He was the second of the two in the lofty cave, while the enemy circled around them as he climbed the mountain; he was the beloved of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and all creation knows that he (peace and blessings be upon him) held no one his equal." At that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "talif" (ruined, i.e. utterly unsound).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Amr bin Ziyad (al-Bahili) used to fabricate hadith (as al-Dhahabi said in al-Talkhis). Also, the narrator mentioned, "Ghalib", is unknown, and so is his father.
Reference / Source: Al-Wahidi recorded it in "al-Tafsir al-Wasit" 2/ 497 via 'Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Warraq > Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: It will be repeated shortly (at no. 4511).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It has a supporting report (shahid) from the mursal narration of al-Zuhri (in Ibn Sa'd 3/ 159, al-Baladhuri 10/ 56, Ibn 'Adi 2/ 160, al-Lalaka'i 2428, Ibn 'Asakir 30/ 90, 91).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But one man is alone in narrating it from al-Zuhri, named "Abu al-'Atuf Jarrah bin Minhal al-Jazari", and he is "matruk al-hadith". Some narrators who are accused of stealing hadith made this narration connected (mawsul) by mentioning Anas bin Malik in it (Ibn 'Adi 2/ 160, Ibn 'Asakir 30/ 91). Ibn 'Adi said: "This hadith is munkar both as connected and as mursal, and the whole problem in it comes from Abu al-'Atuf."
