Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4436

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the last instruction of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of death was: 'Al-salah, al-salah' (Hold fast to the prayer, hold fast to the prayer), and take care of the slaves whom you own. He (peace and blessings be upon him) kept repeating it from his chest while his tongue could not utter it clearly. The two Shaykhs agreed on recording this hadith, and likewise the hadith of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that his last words were: 'Al-rafiq al-a'la' (the Highest Companion).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In "Talkhis al-Dhahabi" and the printed edition it came as "Zuhayr and others", with the addition of the word "and others", which is an interpolation (muqhamah).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (B) and ('A) this word was misspelled (tashif) as "yafid" (with dad), whereas it is "yufis" (with the unpointed sad and a damma on its first letter), meaning: he was unable to express it clearly (to speak).

Grading: The hadith is sahih, but it is the hadith of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), as will be explained.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrators of this chain are thiqah, but there is disagreement over it from Sulayman al-Taymi (Ibn Tarkhan). Al-Nufayli (Abd Allah bin Muhammad al-Harrani) narrated it, in the author's (al-Hakim's) collection and in al-Tahawi ("Sharh Mushkil al-Athar": 3200), through Zuhayr (Ibn Mu'awiyah al-Ju'fi), from Sulayman al-Taymi, from Anas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): And Ahmad bin Abd Allah bin Yunus contradicted al-Nufayli in it. In al-Diya' al-Maqdisi's "al-Mukhtarah" 7/ (2421) he narrated it from Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah, from Sulayman al-Taymi, from Qatadah, from Anas, i.e., he added Qatadah to the chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Most of Sulayman al-Taymi's students also narrated it from him in this way (as al-Daraqutni pointed out in "al-Ilal" 2252). Among these students are Asbat bin Muhammad (Ahmad 19/ 12169), Mu'tamir bin Sulayman (Ibn Majah 2697) and Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid (al-Nasa'i 7058, Ibn Hibban 6605). All of them narrated it from Sulayman al-Taymi, from Qatadah, from Anas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Whereas Abu Dawud al-Hafari (al-Nasa'i 7057) and Qabisah bin Uqbah (Abd bin Humayd 1214, al-Tahawi 3199) narrated it from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Sulayman al-Taymi, from Anas. They did not mention Qatadah in it, and thus agreed with al-Nufayli's narration.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Waki' contradicted both of them (in Ibn Sa'd, "al-Tabaqat" 2/ 222, and al-Tahawi, "al-Mushkil" 3201). He narrated it from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Sulayman al-Taymi, with the words "from someone who heard Anas". Thus he agreed with the majority in mentioning an intermediary between Sulayman al-Taymi and Anas, but he did not name that intermediary (narrator).
Important point: In any case, most narrators agree on mentioning Qatadah in this chain; this is why al-Nasa'i stated decisively after (7057): "Sulayman did not hear this hadith from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him)."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Furthermore, in this hadith there is also disagreement over it from Qatadah himself.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Thus Sa'id bin Abi Arubah (Ahmad 44/ 26483, 26684; al-Nasa'i 7061) and Abu Awanah al-Waddah bin Abd Allah al-Yashkuri (Abu Ya'la 6936, al-Tahawi 3203) and others contradicted Sulayman al-Taymi. They narrated it from Qatadah, from Safinah (the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)), from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her). Thus they made it the hadith of Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (not of Anas).
Details of the narration: Likewise, Hammam bin Yahya al-Awdhi also narrated it from Qatadah (in Ahmad 26657, 26727; Ibn Majah 1625; al-Nasa'i 7063), but he added a man between Qatadah and Safinah, namely "Abu al-Khalil Salih bin Abi Maryam". So these three narrators agree that it is a narration (hadith) of Safinah from Umm Salamah, contrary to what Sulayman al-Taymi said.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): On this basis Abu Hatim and Abu Zur'ah al-Razi (as Ibn Abi Hatim reported in "al-Ilal" 300) declared Sulayman al-Taymi's narration a mistake and held the correct version to be that it is the hadith of Safinah from Umm Salamah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Bakr al-Athram did the same (as reported by Ibn Rajab in "Sharh Ilal al-Tirmidhi"); indeed, he said: This is a gross mistake. Al-Athram also said at the start: "Al-Taymi is among the thiqah narrators, but he could not properly preserve the hadith of Qatadah."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Likewise, al-Daraqutni in "al-Ilal" (2522) and al-Dhahabi in "Tarikh al-Islam" 1/ 816 preferred the view that it is the hadith of Safinah from Umm Salamah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): And al-Bazzar (7014) said: We know of no one who corroborated al-Taymi in his narration from Qatadah from Anas; rather, narrators other than al-Taymi narrate it from Qatadah, from Salih Abu al-Khalil, from Safinah, from Umm Salamah.
Important point: So the correct view (if Allah wills) is that it is the hadith of Safinah from Umm Salamah, as came in Hammam's narration from Qatadah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But the question remains whether Qatadah heard it directly from Safinah or through Abu al-Khalil. Al-Nasa'i stated decisively after (7061) that Qatadah did not hear it from Safinah. Then at (7062) he presented the narration of Shayban al-Nahwi, in which he said: "It was narrated to us from Safinah (the freed slave of Umm Salamah) that he used to say...". This indicates that there is an intermediary between Qatadah and Safinah. But he (Shayban) contradicted Qatadah's students by making it a narration of Safinah himself (without mentioning Umm Salamah). Some of those who narrated it from Abu Awanah, from Qatadah did the same (such as the narration of Qutaybah bin Sa'id, al-Nasa'i 7060). Safinah is a Companion, but the preserved view is that he took this narration from his mistress Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her).
Grading: Al-Bayhaqi in "al-Dala'il" 7/ 205 also declared sahih the narration of Hammam bin Yahya in which the intermediary between Qatadah and Safinah, namely "Abu al-Khalil", is mentioned. Al-Bazzar's approach also points in this direction, as has passed.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Zur'ah al-Razi (in Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-Ilal" 300) also preferred this narration, saying: "Hammam's hadith is more likely (ashbah); Hammam added a man (Abu al-Khalil)."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): And al-Daraqutni's statements in "al-Ilal" differ. At (2522) he preferred Hammam's narration, then later at (3952) he said: "Hammam was not corroborated in his saying: from Abu al-Khalil!"
Important point: But the reliable position is to declare Hammam's narration sahih (and Allah knows best). It is the best and finest of all these narrations, because in it he made clear the intermediary (Abu al-Khalil) between Qatadah and Safinah. And Abu al-Khalil is a thiqah man, so the chain of the hadith through him is sahih. And success and correctness come only from Allah.
Note / Clarification: His words "yugharghiru biha" mean: he (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying this sentence while his soul had reached his throat.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is an oversight (dhuhul) by the author (al-Hakim) (may Allah have mercy on him), because the two of them (al-Bukhari and Muslim) did not narrate it.

Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (3669) and Muslim (2191, 2444) narrated it.
