Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4427

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) met Musaylimah (the Liar), and Musaylimah said to him: "Do you bear witness that I am the messenger of Allah?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I believe in Allah and His messengers." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is a man who has been left behind for the destruction of his people."
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of Mubarak bin Fadalah.
Reference / Source: Umar bin Shabbah narrated it in "Tarikh al-Madinah" 2/ 577 by way of al-Hajjaj bin Nusayr, from Qurrah bin Khalid, from al-Hasan, from Anas, but without mention of his addressing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hajjaj bin Nusayr is weak in hadith, and he used to accept prompting (talqin) (i.e., he would recite whatever he was prompted with).
Details of the narration: It is authentically established from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) in al-Bukhari (4373) and Muslim (2273) that he said: Musaylimah the Liar came in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and began saying: If Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) appoints the succession to me after him, I will follow him. He had come with many people of his tribe. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came towards him, with Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas with him, and in the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was a piece of a palm stalk, until he stood by Musaylimah and his companions and said: "If you were to ask me even for this piece, I would not give it to you, and you will not go beyond Allah's decree concerning you, and if you turn away, Allah will surely destroy you, and I see you as the one about whom I was shown (in a dream) what I was shown...".
