Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4426

Al-Qasim bin Abd al-Rahman narrates from his father that a man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman! There are some people here who recite according to the recitation of Musaylimah (the Liar)." Abdullah said: "Can there be, after Islam has spread, any book other than the Book of Allah, or any messenger other than the Messenger of Allah?" He sent him back. The man came again and said: "O Abdullah! By the One besides whom there is no god, they are in that house reciting the recitation of Musaylimah, and they have with them a mushaf in which the words of Musaylimah are written." This was during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). Abdullah said to Qarazah, who was the head of the cavalry: "Go and surround that house and bring those who are in it." He did so and brought eighty men. Abdullah said to them: "Woe to you! Is there any book other than the Book of Allah, or any messenger other than the Messenger of Allah?" They said: "We repent to Allah; we have wronged ourselves." So Abdullah let them go and did not fight them; rather he exiled them to Syria, except their ringleader Ibn al-Nawwahah, who refused to repent. Then Abdullah said to Qarazah: "Go and strike off his neck and throw his head into his mother's lap, for I think his mother knew of this deed of his." So he did so. Then Abdullah began narrating and said: "This man (Ibn al-Nawwahah) and Ibn Uthal came as messengers from Musaylimah to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: 'Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?' He retorted to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): 'Do you bear witness that Musaylimah is the messenger of Allah?' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Were you not a messenger, I would have killed you.' And from that day the sunnah was established that a messenger is not killed."
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators of this chain are thiqah. Although the narrator al-Mas'udi suffered from mental confusion (ikhtilat), Ja'far bin Awn's hearing from him was before his confusion. There is disagreement about whether Abd al-Rahman bin Abd Allah bin Mas'ud heard from his father (Ibn Mas'ud), but the preponderant view is that his hearing is established.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, an error occurred in the narration of this hadith, in which one hadith was inserted into another, and we think this error came from the author (al-Hakim) himself (may Allah have mercy on him), as will be explained. The reason is that the second story, which Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) related about the two envoys of Musaylimah the Liar and what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them, was narrated by al-Mas'udi by way of Asim bin Abi al-Nujud, from Abu Wa'il Shaqiq bin Salamah, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Details of the narration: Thus Yazid bin Harun narrated this hadith from al-Mas'udi, as found in the "Musnad" of al-Haytham bin Kulayb al-Shashi (747), and he presented the two stories mentioned here separately. He gave the first story with this same chain of the author, then said: Al-Mas'udi said: Asim bin Abi al-Nujud narrated to me from Abu Wa'il that when he was brought to Abd Allah (Ibn Mas'ud), he said: This man and Ibn Uthal both came... then he mentioned the second story.
Important point: Although Yazid bin Harun is counted among those who narrated from al-Mas'udi after his confusion, it appears to us that this hadith is among the narrations he preserved (accurately) from al-Mas'udi. For Yazid bin Harun has several hadiths in which he agreed with narrators about whom the scholars stated explicitly that they heard from al-Mas'udi before his confusion, and this report is one of them.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This is also supported by the fact that Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn narrated the first story separately from al-Mas'udi in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" 9/ (8960) with this same chain of the author, except that he did not mention Abd al-Rahman bin Abd Allah bin Mas'ud in it; but at the end of the story he alluded to him, (saying) that he met a shaykh from among those whom his father had sent off to Syria... (etc.). And Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn is among those about whom Imam Ahmad stated explicitly that he heard from al-Mas'udi before his confusion.
Reference / Source: Abu al-Nadr Hashim bin al-Qasim in Ahmad 6/ (3761), Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi in his "Musnad" (248), and other hadith scholars narrated the second story separately by way of al-Mas'udi, from Asim, from Abu Wa'il, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): A further proof that Yazid bin Harun preserved al-Mas'udi's narration accurately and presented the two stories separately with their two chains, is that al-Mas'udi in fact narrated the second story with the chain Asim, from Abu Wa'il, from Ibn Mas'ud, and not with the chain al-Qasim, from his father, from Ibn Mas'ud. The reason is that this second story is well known through the route of Asim, from Abu Wa'il, from Ibn Mas'ud, since a group other than al-Mas'udi also narrated it from Asim.
Reference / Source: Among them is Sufyan al-Thawri (in al-Nasa'i), as in al-Mizzi's "Tuhfat al-Ashraf" (9280), and Ibn Hibban (4878) and others also narrated it.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise, Abu Bakr bin Ayyash narrated it from Asim in the Musnad of Ahmad 6/ (3837), and Sallam Abu al-Mundhir in the Musnad of Abu Ya'la (5097).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But Ibn Ayyash added a man between Abu Wa'il and Ibn Mas'ud, namely "Ibn Mu'ayz al-Sa'di"; however, Abu Hatim al-Razi (as his son reported from him in "al-Ilal" (910)) preferred the narration of Sufyan al-Thawri, in which this Ibn Mu'ayz is not mentioned. We say: rather, this (omission) is definitely correct, because Sallam and al-Mas'udi agreed with Sufyan al-Thawri in not mentioning him. Also, Abu Wa'il combined the two stories in the narration of Sallam Abu al-Mundhir and Ibn Ayyash.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated the first story separately in "al-Dala'il" 5/ 332-333 by way of Abu Zakariyya bin Abi Ishaq al-Muzakki, from Abu Abd Allah Muhammad bin Ya'qub, from Muhammad bin Abd al-Wahhab, from Ja'far bin Awn, from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, from Qays bin Abi Hazim, who said: A man came to Abd Allah bin Mas'ud... then he mentioned the story with a different wording.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise, narrators other than Ja'far bin Awn narrated this story in accordance with al-Bayhaqi's wording. Among them are Sufyan bin Uyaynah ("Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq": 18708), Waki' bin al-Jarrah ("Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah": 12/ 269), Yazid bin Harun ("Musnad al-Shashi": 746) and Isa bin Yunus ("Musnad Ishaq bin Rahawayh", as cited in al-Busiri's "Ithaf al-Khiyarah": 3473), and others.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): So it appears that this is the correct version in the narration of Ja'far bin Awn, not what the author narrated here. On this basis we think it most likely that the error in this hadith came from the author himself, because Abu Zakariyya al-Muzakki contradicted him in the chain and wording of the hadith, and al-Muzakki's wording agrees with those who narrated it from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, from Qays bin Abi Hazim (other than Ja'far bin Awn). And Allah Most High knows best. Also, Qays bin Abi Hazim combined the two stories in the narration of Ibn Uyaynah.
Details of the narration: Furthermore, these two stories are narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) through a third route besides those of Abu Wa'il and Qays bin Abi Hazim. Harithah bin Mudarrib also narrated it from Ibn Mas'ud: in Abu Dawud (2762) and Ibn Hibban (4879) by way of Sufyan al-Thawri, and in al-Nasa'i (8622) by way of al-A'mash. Both of them (Sufyan and al-A'mash) narrate it from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, and he from Harithah, similar to what is stated here in brief.
Reference / Source: The first story alone, in a longer form than here, was narrated by Ibn al-Mundhir in "al-Awsat" (8376) and al-Tahawi in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" 11/ 312 by way of Isra'il bin Yunus bin Abi Ishaq al-Sabi'i, and by al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 8/ 206 and al-Khatib in "Mudih Awham al-Jam' wa al-Tafriq" 2/ 107 by way of Abu Awanah al-Waddah al-Yashkuri. Both of them (Isra'il and Abu Awanah) narrate it from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from Harithah bin Mudarrib, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Note / Clarification: In both of their narrations there is the additional benefit that Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) consulted Adi bin Hatim, al-Ash'ath bin Qays and Jarir bin Abd Allah about these people; Adi advised killing them, while the other two advised asking them to repent.
Reference / Source: Abd Allah bin Wahb narrated in his "Muwatta'" ("Kitab al-Muharabah": 101) through Yunus bin Yazid, from Ibn Shihab, from Ubayd Allah bin Abd Allah bin Utbah bin Mas'ud, that: Abd Allah bin Mas'ud seized some men in Kufah who were reviving the talk of Musaylimah the Liar and calling to him, and he wrote about them to Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him). Uthman wrote back: "Present to them the religion of truth and the testimony 'there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah'; whoever accepts it and declares himself free of Musaylimah, do not kill him, and whoever holds fast to the religion of Musaylimah, kill him." So some of them accepted it and were released, and some held to the religion of Musaylimah and were killed.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrators are thiqah, but it is "mursal", because Ubayd Allah did not live in the time of Ibn Mas'ud.
Important point: It also contains the additional benefit that Ibn Mas'ud did not decide on his own, but this was by the order of the Commander of the Believers Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them both).
Note / Clarification: It appears that when Adi bin Hatim advised Ibn Mas'ud to kill them, and al-Ash'ath bin Qays and Jarir bin Abd Allah advised asking them to repent, he sought the counsel of the Commander of the Believers Uthman so that he might settle their disagreement; and Uthman's opinion turned out to agree with that of al-Ash'ath and Jarir, and Ibn Mas'ud ruled accordingly. And Allah Most High knows best.
