It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out on a military expedition and encountered the polytheists at Usfan. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed the Zuhr prayer (with his Companions), and the polytheists saw him (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Companions bowing and prostrating together, they said to one another: "This was the best opportunity for you to attack; had you fallen upon them suddenly, they would not even have known of your intentions." Then one of them advised: "Indeed they have another prayer (Asr) coming, which is dearer to them than even their children and their wealth; so make full preparations so that you can attack them all at once at that time." On this occasion Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "And when you are among them and lead them in prayer" [Surah al-Nisa': 102], and Allah Almighty informed him (peace and blessings be upon him) of this plot of the polytheists. So when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led the Asr prayer while the polytheists were right in front, in the direction of the qiblah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) had the Muslims stand behind him in two rows. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said the opening takbir, and all of them said the takbir with him. Then the narrator described the complete method of the prayer of fear, and at its end he stated: When the polytheists saw that some of the Muslims were prostrating while others were standing and watching over them, they said (in astonishment): "They have certainly been informed of our intentions."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "very weak" (da'if jiddan). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is the narrator "al-Nadr Abu 'Umar", whose name is al-Nadr bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Khazzaz, and he is very weak. Reference / Source: As Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (may Allah have mercy on him) said in "Fath al-Bari" (8/ 367), refuting the author's authentication of this hadith. Reference / Source: Al-Wahidi narrated it in "Asbab al-Nuzul" (360) from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ahmad bin Muhammad bin 'Abdan Abu al-Qasim al-Kahhal al-'Attar, from Abu 'Abd Allah Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah bin Muhammad al-Dabbi (who is al-Hakim himself), with this chain. Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in his "Tafsir" (5/ 256 - 257) from Abu Kurayb, from Yunus bin Bukayr, with this chain. Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar narrated it (as in "Kashf al-Astar" 679) from Ahmad bin Muhammad bin 'Ammar (the nephew of Waki') and Ahmad bin 'Abd al-Jabbar, from al-Nadr Abu 'Umar, likewise. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bazzar's chain does not mention "Yunus bin Bukayr"; it appears that his name has dropped out here (fallen out of the chain). And Allah knows best. (1267). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Something similar to this story has been narrated from "Abu 'Ayyash al-Zuraqi" with a sahih chain, which has already appeared with the author at no. (1267). 12/ 304. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This incident is also authentically established as a hadith of Jabir bin 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated by Ahmad (23/ 15019), Muslim (840) and Ibn Hibban (2877). Important point: This narration is different from his narration about "the fighting with Muharib Khasafah" that appeared before this one, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar pointed out in "al-Fath" (12/ 304). (2872). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise, this incident is also authentically established as a hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated by Ahmad (16/ 10765), al-Tirmidhi (3035) and Ibn Hibban (2872).
