Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4361

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the people scattered away from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Uhud, I was among the first to return to him. I saw from a distance that a man was coming swiftly behind me like a bird, wanting to reach the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); it was Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him). And I saw another man who was sometimes lifting him (peace and blessings be upon him) up and sometimes setting him down. I said (to myself): If I could not be that man, then I wish it were Talhah, may my father and mother be ransomed for him. When we reached him (peace and blessings be upon him), it was indeed Sayyiduna Talhah who was supporting him (peace and blessings be upon him). Talhah had sustained sixty-six wounds, and one wound had severed his akhal vein. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had been struck on his blessed cheek, and two rings of the helmet had sunk into his cheek. When Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah saw this state of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he adjured me by Allah to move away from between him and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he gripped one ring with his front tooth and pulled it, and it came out, but his own tooth also broke and fell. Then he looked at the other ring and again adjured me by Allah to move away. He pulled that one out too with another tooth, but that tooth of his fell as well. Thus Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah's front teeth were broken.
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Correction: (1) In our manuscripts the words are written "فداك أنا وأمر", whereas the text we have established is taken from "Sahih Ibn Hibban", and it is more correct; in it the wording is: "كن طلحة فداك أبي وأمي" (Be Talhah, may my father and mother be your ransom).

Grading: (2) Its chain is very weak (da'if jiddan); Ishaq bin Yahya bin Talhah is "matruk" (abandoned), as al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis". What is well known in this report is the mention of his brother "'Isa bin Talhah bin 'Ubayd Allah" instead of Musa. This is how Ibn al-Mubarak, Sa'id bin Sulayman al-Wasiti, al-Waqidi, Shababah bin Sawwar and others narrated it from Ishaq bin Yahya. Ibn Hibban (6980) recorded it by way of Shababah bin Sawwar, from Ishaq bin Yahya, from 'Isa bin Talhah, from 'A'ishah, from Abu Bakr.
ℹ Note: This narration will come later at no. (5240) by way of 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak, and at no. (5710) by way of Sa'id bin Sulayman al-Wasiti; both of them narrate it from Ishaq bin Yahya, from 'Isa bin Talhah.
