Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4359

It is narrated from Musa bin Talhah that Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) returned (from the Battle of Uhud) in such a state that there were thirty-seven or thirty-five marks on his body from sword blows, spear thrusts and arrows. His forehead too bore the mark of a wound, his index finger had been cut off, and the finger next to it had become paralyzed (useless).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Correction and explanation: (1) In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "ترصع". His statement "rusi'a" means: he was struck with a severe thrust, so that his forehead gushed with blood. In the other narrations of the report the wording is "rubi'a jabinuhu", meaning that the "arba'" of his head, i.e. its sides, were wounded.

Grading: (2) Its chain is da'if because of the weakness of Ishaq bin Yahya (who is Ibn Talhah bin 'Ubayd Allah). Ibn al-Mubarak (in the chain) is 'Abd Allah, al-Hasan bin 'Isa is "al-Masarjisi", and Muhammad bin Ishaq is "al-Thaqafi al-Sarraj".
Documentation: Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "al-Hilyah" (4/ 372) from Abu Hamid bin Jabalah, from Muhammad bin Ishaq, with this chain. But he said (in the wording): "His forehead was struck by it, his sciatic vein (nasa) was cut, and his fingers became paralysed."
Documentation: This narration is in Ibn al-Mubarak's "al-Jihad" (no. 92) - in the recension of Abu 'Uthman Sa'id bin Rahmah al-Missisi from him - and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir recorded it in "Tarikh Dimashq" (25/ 79). Also, Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (3/ 199) from Musa bin Isma'il, from Ibn al-Mubarak, with the wording: "Talhah returned with thirty-seven (37) or seventy-five (75) wounds from blows, thrusts and arrows; his forehead was wounded, his sciatic vein was cut, and the finger next to his thumb became paralysed."
Supporting reports: It is established in "Sahih al-Bukhari" (4063) from Qays bin Abi Hazim, who said: "I saw Talhah's hand paralysed; he had shielded the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with it on the day of Uhud."
