Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) There is no harm in its narrators (la ba'sa bihim), but the correct view is that it is mursal from Yahya bin 'Abd Allah bin 'Abd al-Rahman, without mention of his grandfather "'Abd al-Rahman". The author (al-Hakim) is alone here in "al-Mustadrak" in mentioning him (the grandfather) in the narration of Yunus bin Bukayr, whereas al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (9/ 89) from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim without mentioning him.
Reference / Source: Likewise Ibn al-Athir narrated it in "Usd al-Ghabah" (3/ 322) by way of Abu al-Husayn Ridwan bin Ahmad al-Saydalani, from Ahmad bin 'Abd al-Jabbar al-'Utaridi, from Yunus bin Bukayr, and he too did not mention him (the grandfather).
Details of the narration: Likewise all the other students of Muhammad bin Ishaq narrated it from him, from 'Abd Allah bin Abi Bakr, from Yahya bin 'Ubayd Allah, as mursal, as the documentation of their routes below will show.
Technical note / Error (wahm): However, Abu Nu'aym ("Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" 4675) and Ibn al-Athir ("Usd al-Ghabah" 3/ 322) mentioned that this report came, with some later narrators, through the narration of Yazid bin Harun and through the narration of Wahb bin Jarir from his father Jarir bin Hazim, with mention of "'Abd al-Rahman". This is an error by those later narrators who narrated it through their routes, because Ibn Abi Shaybah ("al-Musannaf" 14/ 369) narrated it from Yazid bin Harun, and Ishaq bin Rahwayh ("al-Musnad" 2095) from Wahb bin Jarir from his father, without mention of 'Abd al-Rahman. This makes clear that whoever mentioned 'Abd al-Rahman erred, and it shows that the students of Ibn Ishaq agree on its being "mursal". What further confirms this is that al-Waqidi narrated it from 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Abd Allah bin 'Uthman bin Hunayf, from 'Abd Allah bin Abi Bakr, from Yahya bin 'Abd Allah bin 'Abd al-Rahman as mursal (see: Ibn Sa'd, al-Tabaqat 6/ 121; Ibn 'Asakir, Tarikh Dimashq 73/ 51). This is another route from 'Abd Allah bin Abi Bakr in which the report is mursal.
Technical note / Disagreement: There is a disagreement among the students of Ibn Ishaq over the name of 'Abd al-Rahman's father: some called him "As'ad bin Zurarah" (with the alif), as here, and some called him "Sa'd bin Zurarah" (without the alif). These two were brothers, as more than one of the imams of sirah and history have stated definitively. But Ibn Sa'd stated definitively in "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 562) that "As'ad bin Zurarah" (with the alif) left no male offspring, only daughters, whereas his brother "Sa'd" had male offspring. This implies that whoever said "Ibn As'ad" here has erred.
Technical note / Disagreement: Whereas al-Bukhari stated the opposite definitively in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (8/ 283): in the biography of Yahya bin 'Abd Allah bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin As'ad (with the alif), he mentioned that whoever said "Ibn Sa'd" (without the alif) erred.
Important point / Reconciliation: Among the narrators there is also "Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin As'ad bin Zurarah", and Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj mentioned that As'ad bin Zurarah was the maternal grandfather of Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman. On this basis it is possible that whoever said "Ibn Sa'd bin Zurarah" traced his lineage to his paternal grandfather, and whoever said "Ibn As'ad bin Zurarah" traced it to his maternal grandfather. This is well known among the hadith scholars and has many parallels, so both statements may be correct. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2680) and al-Tabari ("Tarikh" 2/ 39) narrated it by way of Salamah bin al-Fadl al-Abrash; Ibn Hisham in "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" (2/ 299) from Ziyad bin 'Abd Allah al-Bakka'i; and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (4675) by way of Ibrahim bin Sa'd. All three of them narrate it from Muhammad bin Ishaq, from 'Abd Allah bin Abi Bakr, from Yahya bin 'Abd Allah bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Sa'd bin Zurarah, as mursal.
Details of the narration: Salamah and Ibrahim bin Sa'd named him "Ibn Sa'd bin Zurarah". As for al-Bakka'i, the editors of the Sirah mentioned that some manuscripts of the Sirah have "Ibn Sa'd bin Zurarah" and others have "Ibn As'ad bin Zurarah".
Note / Clarification: Likewise Yazid bin Harun and Jarir bin Hazim said in their narration from Ibn Ishaq: "Ibn As'ad bin Zurarah".
