Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4336

It is narrated from Talhah al-Nadri (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: When any man among us came to Madinah and had an acquaintance ('arif) there, he would stay with that acquaintance; but if he had no acquaintance there, he would stay in the Suffah. So I came to Madinah and had no acquaintance there, so I stayed in the Suffah. There, one mudd of dates (approximately 625 grams) was given to us daily from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), between every two men, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to clothe us in coarse cotton cloth (khunuf). One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in one of the daytime prayers. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the salam, the people of the Suffah called out to him (peace and blessings be upon him) from the right and the left: O Messenger of Allah! These dates have burned our stomachs, and these coarse garments of ours have torn apart. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards his pulpit and ascended it, then he praised and extolled Allah and mentioned the hardships that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had endured from his people, until he said: "Indeed, more than ten days passed over me and my companion when he and I had nothing to eat except the fruit of the arak tree (al-barir)." - The narrator says: I asked Abu Harb: What is this "al-barir"? He said: It was the food of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), namely the fruit of the arak tree. - (He (peace and blessings be upon him) continued his speech and said:) "Then we came to these brothers of ours from the Ansar, whose main food is dates, and they shared it with us. By Allah! If I found bread and meat for you, I would certainly fill you with it; but it may be that you will live to see a time when large bowls (of food) are brought to one of you morning and evening." The narrator says: The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah! Will we be better on that day or today? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, you are better today. Today you love one another, whereas on that day you will strike one another's necks." - The narrator thinks that he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "You will hate one another."
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) "Al-Nasri": with nun followed by an undotted sad. He was so attributed by several, among them Khalifah bin Khayyat (al-Tabaqat, pp. 55 and 183), Ibn Qani' (Mu'jam al-Sahabah 2/43), Abu Nu'aym (Ma'rifat al-Sahabah, before hadith 3929), Ibn Makula (al-Ikmal 1/390) and al-Dhahabi (al-Mushtabih p. 83); and al-Dhahabi was followed in this by the authors of "Tawdih al-Mushtabih" (1/548) and "Tabsir al-Muntabih" (1/157). They said: It is an attribution to "Nadr bin Mu'awiyah" (of the tribe of Hawazin). We say: In some manuscripts it also comes with "ba'" (al-Basri), and that is also correct, because Ibn Hibban mentioned in "al-Thiqat" (3/204) that he lived in Basrah; however, among the early generations attribution to a tribe was usually more common than attribution to a city.

Note / Clarification: (2) The text within brackets was not in our manuscripts, but it is present in the "Mahmudiyyah manuscript", as in the "al-Mayman edition", and it agrees with al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" (1155), where he narrated this hadith from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain that is here.

Grading: (1) This chain is sahih by way of Ali bin Mus'hir. Ali bin Asim (al-Wasiti) in the other chain has "weakness", but he has been corroborated.
Technical note / Interpolation (idraj): However, the words at the end of the hadith, "They said: O Messenger of Allah, are we better today…" (to the end), are not part of the hadith of Talhah al-Nasri; rather, Dawud bin Abi Hind narrated it from al-Hasan al-Basri as mursal, as is set out clearly and in detail in the narration that comes later with the author (al-Hakim) (no. 8862) (which is through the route of Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Abd Allah bin Attab, from Yahya bin Ja'far bin Abi Talib, from Ali bin Asim). Some narrators "interpolated" (mudraj) it into the hadith of Talhah.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (1155 and 9843) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with his first chain, in the same way.
Reference / Source: Hammad bin Ishaq al-Azdi narrated it in "Tarikat al-Nabi (peace and blessings be upon him)" (p. 58) through the route of Abd Allah bin Ayyub al-Mukharrimi from Ali bin Asim.
Details of the narration: He separated the "mursal" part of al-Hasan from the hadith of Talhah.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Asim narrated it in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (1434) and Abd Allah bin Ahmad in his additions (zawa'id) to his father's book "al-Zuhd" (137) through the route of Hafs bin Ghiyath; and Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" (1/277-278), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (2/445) and "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/524), and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Mudih Awham al-Jam' wa al-Tafriq" (1/464) through the route of Sulayman bin Hayyan (Abu Khalid al-Ahmar). Both of them (Hafs and Sulayman) narrate it from Dawud bin Abi Hind with this same chain.
Details of the narration: They did not separate the "mursal" narration of al-Hasan from the hadith of Talhah.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (Musnad Umar 2/707) through the route of Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Muharibi; Abu al-Qasim bin Bishran in "al-Amali" (part one, 425) through the route of Hushaym bin Bashir; and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (9842) through the route of Khalid bin Abd Allah al-Wasiti. All three of them narrate it from Dawud bin Abi Hind.
Details of the narration: All of them separated the mursal narration of al-Hasan from the hadith of Talhah; except that Khalid al-Wasiti did not name al-Hasan, but said: "Someone else added to it".
Reference / Source: The hadith of Talhah, separately from the mursal of al-Hasan, was narrated by Ahmad (25/15988) through the route of Abd al-Warith bin Sa'id al-Anbari, and by Ibn Hibban (6684) through the route of Khalid bin Abd Allah al-Wasiti; both of them narrate it from Dawud bin Abi Hind. Whereas the mursal narration of al-Hasan was narrated separately by Hannad bin al-Sari in "al-Zuhd" (760 and 761), Ibn al-A'rabi in "al-Mu'jam" (2148), Abu Bakr al-Kalabadhi in "Bahr al-Fawa'id" (p. 152), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/340) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (9850), through various routes from al-Hasan al-Basri.
