It is narrated from Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) that during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) some people were mentioned who seemed to give Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) superiority over Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). When this reached Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "By Allah! One night of Abu Bakr('s life) is better than the family of Umar, and one day of Abu Bakr is better than the family of Umar." When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out to go to the cave of Thawr, and Abu Bakr was with him (peace and blessings be upon him), he would sometimes walk in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him) and sometimes behind, until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) noticed it and asked: "O Abu Bakr! What is the matter with you that you sometimes walk in front of me and sometimes behind me?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah! When I think of being pursued from behind, I walk behind you, and when I fear an ambush, I walk in front of you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Bakr! If some calamity were to happen, would you prefer that it befall you rather than me?" He said: "Yes, by the One who sent you with the truth! There is no misfortune that I would not be ready to take upon myself instead of you." When the two of them reached the cave, Abu Bakr said: "O Messenger of Allah! Stay right here so that I may clean out the cave for you and make it safe from dangers." So he went inside and cleaned it, until, when he reached the upper part of the cave, he remembered that he had not checked the holes, so he said: "O Messenger of Allah! Stay where you are until I clean out the holes." Then he went in and cleaned them, and then said: "O Messenger of Allah! Now come in." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul! That one night is better than the family of Umar."
This hadith has a sahih chain on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), were it not for the irsal (a missing link) in it, but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In the manuscripts this word is written "bika duni", which is an error; the correct wording is what comes in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Dala'il" (2/476) in the narration of Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim.
Grading: (2) This narration is hasan li-ghayrihi (hasan due to supporting evidence). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrators of this chain are "thiqah", but it is mursal, because Muhammad bin Sirin did not live in the time of Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). However, this report is also narrated through other routes. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (2/476) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ibn Battah narrated it in "al-Ibanah" (9/531 and 834) through the route of Ahmad bin Abd Allah bin Yunus from al-Sari bin Yahya (with this same chain). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported (shahid) by the "mursal" narration of Abd Allah bin Abi Mulaykah, found in Ahmad's "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (22), al-Azraqi's "Akhbar Makkah" (2/25), al-Fakihi's "Akhbar Makkah" (2410), al-Lalaka'i's "Sharh Usul al-I'tiqad" (2425) and Ibn Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" (30/81). And its narrators are "thiqah". Details of the narration: Something similar to this story is also narrated from the hadith of Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) as "mawsul" (with a connected chain), narrated by Abu Bakr al-Dinawari in "al-Mujalasah" (2238), Abu al-Layth al-Samarqandi in "al-Tafsir" (2/58-59), al-Lalaka'i in "Usul al-I'tiqad" (2426), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Dala'il" (2/476-477) and Ibn Asakir (30/79-80). Grading: Al-Dhahabi mentioned it in "Tarikh al-Islam" (1/672) and said: "It is munkar, and its culprit is Abd al-Rahman bin Ibrahim al-Rasibi, for he is not thiqah besides being unknown (majhul)." Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: In this chain there is also "Furat bin al-Sa'ib", and he is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned in hadith). Details of the narration: Abu Bakr al-Siddiq's (may Allah be pleased with him) searching (clearing) of the cave before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered it is narrated through several chains, but all of them have "criticism" (maqal, weakness). See them in al-Ajurri's "al-Shari'ah" (1275-1277). Important point: The strongest of them all are the "mursal" narrations of Ibn Sirin and Ibn Abi Mulaykah. Note / Clarification: "Al-mulimmah" means: a severe calamity among the calamities of time. Note / Clarification: "Al-jiharah": it is the plural of "juhr" (burrow), which is any hole that vermin and beasts of prey dig for themselves.
