It is narrated from Sayyiduna Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him). Amr bin Dinar states: I asked him: How long did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stay in Makkah? He said: "Ten years." I said: Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that he stayed for ten-odd years. Urwah said: "He took that from the words of a poet." Sufyan says: Yahya bin Sa'id narrated to us that he said: I heard an elderly woman of the Ansar say: I saw Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) going to Sirmah bin Qays to learn these verses: "He stayed among Quraysh for ten-odd years, reminding the people (of Allah), hoping he might find a sympathetic friend; and he would present himself to the people during the Hajj seasons, but found no one who would give him shelter, nor anyone who would invite (him). Then when he came to us and his abode of emigration became settled, and he became happy and content in Taybah (Madinah), and the time came when he no longer feared the oppression of any distant oppressor, nor any transgressor among the people, we spent on him the best of our wealth, and offered our lives and our devotion at the time of battle. We take as enemies all those people who took him as an enemy, rightfully, even if it be a close and beloved friend of ours. And we know that there is no god but Allah, and that the Book of Allah has now become our guide."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it; and this narration is the most fitting one for establishing proof of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) stay in Makkah of ten-odd years. It also has a sahih supporting narration (shahid) on the condition of Muslim.

Note / Clarification: (1) In manuscript (Z) this word has been miswritten (tashif, an error of dots/letters) as "alqa". (The original word) is "alfa", meaning: he found and met (wajada wa laqiya).
Grading: (2) The narrators of these two reports are "thiqah", except that in the report of Yahya bin Sa'id (al-Ansari) the elderly Ansari woman from whom he heard it is left "unnamed" (mubham). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Our strong presumption is that this Ansari woman was a "female Companion" (sahabiyyah); the evidence for this is that she saw "Sirmah bin Qays", who died at the end of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) era, since Sirmah is not mentioned in any narrations or reports of the conquests after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Conclusion: So if this is established, then the chain of the report of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari is sahih. And Allah the Exalted knows best. Reference / Source: Muslim (2350) and al-Nasa'i (4197) narrated the report of Urwah bin al-Zubayr through routes from Sufyan bin Uyaynah. And the report of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari was narrated by Abu al-Walid al-Azraqi in "Akhbar Makkah" (2/147), Abu Bakr al-Dinawari in "al-Mujalasah" (779), al-Khattabi in "Gharib al-Hadith" (2/33), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Dala'il" (2/513-514), Ibn Abd al-Barr in "al-Isti'ab" (pp. 29-30) and Ibn al-Shajari in "al-Amali" (1/74) through routes from Sufyan bin Uyaynah. Details of the narration: After this, a narration will come from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed in Makkah for fifteen (15) years. Grading: This narration is shadh. missing 3366 to 3370 Note: (In the original text) the text from hadith no. 3366 to 3370 is missing. missing 3366 to Note / Clarification: (Hadith nos. 3366 to 3370 are missing.) He said: This dream is different from the earlier dream (mentioned at hadith 4304), namely the hadith of Abu Musa in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was uncertain, as passed. Ibn al-Tin said: It is as though the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was (first) shown the abode of emigration with a description that encompassed Madinah and other places, then he was shown the description specific to Madinah, and so it became determined.
