Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) This hadith is sahih, and its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq (al-Muttalibi, the author of the Sirah); he explicitly stated that he heard it, so the suspicion of his tadlis is removed.
Note / Correction: But his saying in the text of the report, "kunna ahada ashar" (we were eleven), is an error (wahm); the correct wording is "ithnay ashar" (twelve), as it comes in all the other narrations of the hadith.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (37/22754) narrated it from Ya'qub bin Ibrahim bin Sa'd, from his father, from Ibn Ishaq, with this same chain.
Details of the narration: He added in it "the wording of the pledge", saying: "(The pledge was) that we would not associate anything with Allah, not steal, not commit fornication, not kill our children, not bring forth a slander we invent between our hands and our feet, and not disobey him (peace and blessings be upon him) in what is right. So if you fulfil this, you will have Paradise, and if you commit any of these things, your matter rests with Allah: if He wills He will punish you, and if He wills He will forgive you."
Reference / Source: This hadith is in al-Bukhari (3893 and 6873) and Muslim (1709) through the route of al-Layth bin Sa'd from Yazid bin Abi Habib, but there only the wording of the pledge is mentioned, without mention of the number, the place of the pledge or its time.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ibn Ishaq was corroborated in mentioning all these details (the number, the place, etc.) by "al-Waqidi" from Yazid bin Abi Habib, as in "Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd" (1/187).
