Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: As a hadith of Ya'la bin Murrah (may Allah be pleased with him), this narration is weak because of "idtirab" (inconsistency).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is "munqati'" (broken); al-Mizzi in "Tahdhib al-Kamal" (28/ 569 and 32/ 399) and al-Dhahabi in "Tarikh al-Islam" (2/ 552) stated with certainty (jazm) that the narration of al-Minhal bin 'Amr from Ya'la bin Murrah is "mursal" (broken). Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar upheld this view of al-Mizzi in "Tahdhib al-Tahdhib".
Important point: The evidence for this break (and Allah knows best) is that in some routes of the hadith an intermediary between the two of them (al-Minhal and Ya'la) is stated, with the words: "'an Ibn Ya'la bin Murrah 'an abihi" (from the son of Ya'la bin Murrah, from his father). This is more correct than the narrations which, like the author's narration here, have "'an Ya'la bin Murrah 'an abihi" (i.e. the word "Ibn" has been dropped), which gives the false impression that this hadith belongs to the Musnad of Murrah (Ya'la's father). Al-Bukhari said (as al-Dhahabi reported in "Tarikh al-Islam" 1/ 690): "It is in fact narrated from Ya'la himself." Abu Nu'aym likewise stated with certainty in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah", in the entry on Murrah al-Thaqafi (Ya'la's father), that the "preserved" (mahfuz, most correct) form of it is "Ibn Ya'la, from his father".
Note / Clarification: The apparent position is that the error (wahm) in it came from "Sulayman bin Mihran al-A'mash", as al-Bayhaqi suggested as a possibility in "al-Dala'il" (6/ 22), because this whole disagreement revolves around him, as will be explained.
Reference / Source: This narration is in Yunus bin Bukayr's additions (ziyadat) to Ibn Ishaq's "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" (427).
Reference / Source: This hadith, with the three stories mentioned, in long and short forms, was recorded by the following hadith scholars: Ahmad (29/ 17549 and 7564), Ibn Majah (339), Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (1613 and 1614), Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (2170), Abu Nu'aym in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (292), al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/ 21-22), Ibn 'Abd al-Barr in "al-Tamhid" (1/ 227) and Ibn 'Asakir (4/ 366), via Waki'. Also Ibn Abi 'Asim (1611) via Muhammad bin Musaffa, from Yahya bin 'Isa al-Ramli, and al-Baghawi (2171) via Harun bin 'Abdullah al-Hammal, from Muhadir bin al-Muwarri'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All three of these narrators (Waki', Yahya bin 'Isa and Muhadir) narrate it from al-A'mash with this same chain. However, other variations in the chain are also reported from these three.
Reference / Source: This narration is in Waki''s "al-Zuhd" (508), and via his route it was recorded by Ahmad (17549 and 17563), Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (1/ 144), Hannad in "al-Zuhd" (1338), Ibn Abi 'Asim (1612 and 1614), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Dala'il" (292), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Dala'il" (6/ 22) and Ibn 'Asakir (4/ 366-367).
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Kabir" (22/ 680) via Muhammad bin 'Abdullah bin Numayr, from Muhadir bin al-Muwarri'. Both of them (Waki' and Muhadir) narrate it from al-A'mash.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (17567) also recorded it via Abu Bakr bin 'Ayyash, from Habib bin Abi 'Amrah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Both of them (al-A'mash and Habib) narrate from al-Minhal, from Ya'la bin Murrah (and in this chain they did not mention Ya'la's father). Although Habib is "thiqah", the narrator from him, Abu Bakr bin 'Ayyash, used to make errors (wahm) in hadith, and he also heard from al-A'mash; so it may be that he (mistakenly) mentioned Habib in place of al-A'mash, because this hadith via al-Minhal is not known from anyone except al-A'mash. Allah the Exalted knows best.
Reference / Source: Ibrahim al-Harbi recorded it in "Gharib al-Hadith" (1/ 315) from Muhammad bin 'Abdullah bin Numayr, and Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (304) via Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj, both of them from Waki'. Also al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Kabir" (22/ 679) via Asad bin Musa, from Yahya bin 'Isa al-Ramli.
Details of the narration: Both of them (Waki' and Yahya bin 'Isa) narrate it with the chain al-A'mash, from al-Minhal, from "Ibn Ya'la bin Murrah", from his father (i.e. here the intermediary of Ya'la's son is mentioned instead of Ya'la), but they did not name Ibn Ya'la.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Ahadith al-Tiwal" (54) and al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/ 22) via 'Umar bin 'Abdullah bin Ya'la bin Murrah; al-'Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (870) via 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ishaq al-Kufi; and Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani in "al-Dala'il" (240) via Yunus bin Khabbab. All three narrate it from 'Abdullah bin Ya'la bin Murrah, from his father. (However, Yunus said "from Ibn Ya'la" and did not state his name explicitly.)
Grading: All three of these narrators ('Umar bin 'Abdullah, 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ishaq and Yunus) are "weak" and "munkar al-hadith". The weakest of them is 'Umar. And about his father ('Abdullah), al-Dhahabi said in "al-Mizan" that more than one imam declared him weak.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari recorded it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (6/ 357) in suspended form (mu'allaq) via Khalaf bin Mihran al-'Adawi, from 'Amr bin 'Uthman bin Ya'la bin Murrah, from his father, from his grandfather.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Amr and his father ('Uthman) are both "majhul" (unknown).
Reference / Source: Ahmad likewise recorded it at (17548) via 'Uthman bin Hakim, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd al-'Aziz; at (17559) via 'Asim bin Abi al-Nujud, from Habib bin Abi Jubayrah; and at (17565) via 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, from 'Abdullah bin Hafs bin Abi 'Aqil.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): These three teachers (from whom it was narrated) are unknown, and all three narrate from Ya'la bin Murrah (without mentioning his father). Habib called him "Ya'la bin Siyabah", who is in fact Ya'la bin Murrah himself, his father's name being Siyabah, as Yahya bin Ma'in and Abu Zur'ah stated explicitly (see Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-'Ilal" 2695), and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (6639) and al-Khatib in "Mudih Awham al-Jam' wa al-Tafriq" (1/ 282) also stated this with certainty.
Details of the narration: These narrators added to the story of the camel that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked its owner to give him the camel but he did not give it, whereupon he (peace and blessings be upon him) enjoined him to treat the camel well. The exception is 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd al-'Aziz, in whose narration the owner gifted the camel to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) branded it with the mark of charity (sadaqah). Also, in his narration Habib mentioned, instead of the story of the woman and her son, the incident of "a man being punished in his grave".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the narration of 'Abdullah bin Hafs, the context of the story of the woman and of the tree is clearly different from the context of the stories here. This 'Abdullah is someone about whose name 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib was inconsistent (idtirab), and no one other than 'Ata' narrated from him, so he is "majhul" (unknown).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd al-'Aziz, Ibn Hajar said in "al-Ta'jil" (636): "My strong presumption is that he is al-Umami." We say: if he is al-Umami, then he is "saduq", but he did not live in the time of Ya'la bin Murrah (i.e. the narration is broken); and if he is someone else, then he is not well known, as al-Husayni said; indeed Ibn Ma'in stated with certainty that he is "majhul". Likewise Habib bin Abi Jubayrah is also unknown.
Important point / Summary of the research: We say: the multiplicity of these routes (chains) in the hadith of Ya'la gives a strong presumption, or even certainty for a deeply versed scholar, that Ya'la bin Murrah did narrate this story in general, as Ibn Kathir said in "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" (9/ 14-15).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Something like this hadith, with its three stories, is also narrated from Jabir bin 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), via Isma'il bin 'Abd al-Malik bin Abi al-Sufayra', from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Yunus bin Bukayr in his additions to "al-Sirah" (429), Ibn Abi Shaybah (11/ 490-492), 'Abd bin Humayd (1053), al-Darimi (17), Ibn al-Mundhir in "al-Awsat" (253), al-Bayhaqi in "al-I'tiqad" (p. 289-291), "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (1/ 93) and "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/ 18), Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (254) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (4/ 373). Al-Busiri quoted from al-Daraqutni in "Ithaf al-Khiyarah" (after number 6466) that "Isma'il bin 'Abd al-Malik is alone in narrating this long hadith."
Grading: We say: Isma'il has "weakness" due to his poor memory (su' al-hifz).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Zam'ah bin Salih also narrated it from Ziyad bin Sa'd, from Abu al-Zubayr, but he said: Yunus bin Khabbab narrated to me, saying: I heard Abu 'Ubaydah bin 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud narrate from his father 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Via this route it was recorded by al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (9189), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Dala'il" (6/ 20) and Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani in "al-Dala'il" (135).
Details of the narration: In al-Tabarani and al-Bayhaqi there is only the story of the two trees and the camel, while in al-Asbahani all three stories are present.
Grading: Its chain is weak. Abu 'Ubaydah's hearing from his father is not established, and Zam'ah bin Salih is "da'if al-hadith" (weak in hadith).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It is apparent in this chain that Zam'ah bin Salih contradicted Isma'il bin 'Abd al-Malik in narrating from Abu al-Zubayr. Al-Bayhaqi said in "al-Dala'il": "The hadith of Jabir is more authentic, and Zam'ah bin Salih is alone in this narration."
Details of the narration: The story of the camel is narrated with a different context from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) via al-Dhayyal bin Harmalah.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (42/ 14333) and others recorded it.
Grading: Its chain is hasan.
Details of the narration: And the story of the two trees is narrated similarly from his (Jabir's) hadith as well.
Reference / Source: Sahih Muslim (3012) and Ibn Hibban (6524).
Details of the narration: The story of the boy who suffered from madness (lamam) is also narrated from the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them).
Reference / Source: Musnad Ahmad (4/ 2133).
Grading: Its chain is weak.
