Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4244

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) let the hair of his forehead (nawasi) hang down for as long as Allah willed (as the People of the Book used to do), and then after that he began to part it.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih, but via al-Zuhri, from 'Ubaydullah bin 'Abdullah, from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them).
Important point: As Imam Ahmad said (as cited in "al-Tamhid" 6/71), and Muhammad bin Yahya al-Dhuhli stated explicitly, this chain is the "sahih and preserved (mahfuz)" one.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hammad bin Khalid al-Khayyat contradicted all of Malik's students, who narrate it from Malik, from Ziyad bin Sa'd, from al-Zuhri as "mursal". Therefore in Malik's hadith the "mursal" form is the preserved one, as Ibn 'Abd al-Barr said in "al-Tamhid" 6/69.
Note / Clarification: In the narration of transmitters other than Malik the "connected" form (wasl, the chain being muttasil) is the preserved one, as Ahmad and al-Dhuhli stated explicitly, but it is via al-Zuhri, from 'Ubaydullah, from Ibn 'Abbas.
Reference / Source: This narration is in "Musnad Ahmad" 20/ (13254).
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (9283) recorded it as "mursal" via 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Qasim, from Malik, from Ziyad bin Sa'd, from al-Zuhri.
Details of the narration: Likewise it is found as mursal in "al-Muwatta'" of Imam Malik in the transmissions of Yahya al-Laythi (2/948), Abu Mus'ab al-Zuhri (1992) and Suwayd bin Sa'id (after 660).
Reference / Source: Ahmad 4/(2605) and 5/(2942), al-Bukhari (3558, 3944), Muslim (2336), al-Nasa'i (9282) and Ibn Hibban (5485) recorded it via Yunus bin Yazid al-Ayli. Also Ahmad (2209, 2364), al-Bukhari (5917), Muslim (2336), Abu Dawud (4188) and Ibn Majah (3632) recorded it via Ibrahim bin Sa'd; both of them transmit it from al-Zuhri, from 'Ubaydullah bin 'Abdullah, from Ibn 'Abbas with a connected chain.
