Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4224

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Bedouin asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about fasting on Monday, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is the day on which I was born and on which (the revelation) began to be sent down to me."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it with these words. Imam Muslim narrated, in the hadith of Shu'bah from Qatadah with this same chain, these words: "Fasting on the day of Arafah expiates the sins of this year and of the year before it."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih, and its chain is strong (qawi).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yahya bin Abi Talib and 'Abd al-Wahhab bin 'Ata' (al-Khaffaf) are both "saduq" and "la ba'sa bihima," and they have been corroborated. Sa'id is Ibn Abi 'Arubah, and Qatadah is Ibn Di'amah (al-Sadusi).
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad 37/(22541) and Ibn Hibban (3642) via two routes from Sa'id bin Abi 'Arubah, with this chain.
Reference / Source: A similar narration was recorded by Ahmad 37/(22537) and (22550), Muslim (1162) and al-Nasa'i (2790) via various routes from Ghaylan bin Jarir, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hakim's including it as a supplement (istidrak) is an oversight on his part.

Details of the narration: This is part of the author's (al-Hakim) previous hadith.
