Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4159

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the wife of Ayyub (peace be upon him) said to him: "By Allah! Such hardship and starvation have befallen me that I have sold the braid (lock) of hair from my head for a loaf of bread so that I could feed you, so supplicate to Allah to grant you healing." He (peace be upon him) said: "Alas! We lived in blessings for seventy years, and now only seven years have passed for us in trial."

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this word has been corrupted into "ba'th qawmi", and the word "qawmi" dropped out of (S) and ('A). The correct text we have established is from al-Bayhaqi's narration in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (9337) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain of his. "Al-qarn" means: a braid of hair.

Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak) because of the weakness of Ali bin Zayd (Ibn Jud'an).
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (9337), and via him by Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 10/ 64, from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Muntazam" 1/ 322 via Kathir bin Hisham, from Hammad bin Salamah, with it.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Asakir 10/ 63-64 via Sulayman bin Harb, from Hammad bin Salamah, with it, but without mentioning that Ayyub's (peace be upon him) wife sold a braid of her hair.
