It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "As for the Asbat (Tribes), they are the sons of Ya'qub (peace be upon him): Yusuf, Binyamin, Rubil, Yahudha, Sham'un, Lawi, Dan and Qahath. They were twelve men in all, and Allah Almighty spread out from them twelve tribes (asbat) whose (complete) lineages no one knows except Allah. Allah Almighty has said: 'And We divided them into twelve tribes, as nations' [Surah al-A'raf: 160]."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is "hasan". Technical note / Defect ('illah): A group narrated it from 'Amr bin Talhah (who is 'Amr bin Hammad bin Talhah al-Qannad), from Asbat, from al-Suddi, and (apparently) did not take it beyond al-Suddi. Yet al-Suddi received the Tafsir and the reports of the prophets from a group, among them "Murrah" (Ibn Sharahil al-Hamdani), and Murrah took from 'Abdullah (Ibn Mas'ud). Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in his "Tafsir" 1/ 568 from Musa bin Harun; Ibn al-Mundhir in his "Tafsir" (669) by way of Ishaq bin Rahawayh; and Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" 1/ 243, 2/ 698 and 4/ 1118 from Abu Zur'ah al-Razi. All three narrate it from 'Amr bin Hammad bin Talhah al-Qannad, from Asbat bin Nasr, from al-Suddi, and do not take the chain beyond al-Suddi. Analysis (al-Tabari's method): But it appears that Musa bin Harun's narration too is (in reality) "musnad" (connected) like the author's narration here. The reason is that we found, by examining al-Tabari's narrations of Musa bin Harun's copy of "Tafsir al-Suddi", that at the beginning of the "Tafsir" al-Tabari was diligent in mentioning al-Suddi's teachers from whom he took the wordings of the Tafsir and the reports of the prophets (such as Abu Malik Ghazwan al-Ghifari and Abu Salih Badham the freed slave of Umm Hani', both of whom took from Ibn 'Abbas, and Murrah bin Sharahil al-Hamdani, who narrates from Ibn Mas'ud); al-Suddi likewise took directly, without an intermediary, from a group of Companions whom he left unnamed. Later al-Tabari began omitting them for brevity in Musa bin Harun's narration and limited himself to saying: "al-Suddi said". The proof of this is that in some places in al-Tabari's Tafsir the statement stops at al-Suddi, while the same statement is found in "Tarikh al-Tabari" "musnad", with mention of al-Suddi's teachers.
