It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: 'And We gave him glad tidings of Ishaq' [Surah al-Saffat: 112], that he said: "This was the glad tidings of prophethood. He was given glad tidings of Ishaq (peace be upon him) twice: once when he was born, and a second time when he was made a prophet."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.
Mention of those who said that the one to be sacrificed (al-Dhabih) was Ishaq bin Ibrahim (peace be upon them both).

Grading: This report is sahih, and its chain is "hasan" because of Sunayd bin Dawud (the author of the well-known Tafsir), and he has been corroborated. Reference / Source: Al-Tha'labi narrated it in his "Tafsir" 8/ 158 by way of Ahmad bin Zuhayr bin Harb (Ibn Abi Khaythamah), from Sunayd, with this chain. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim narrated it in his "Tafsir", as in "Tafsir Ibn Kathir" 7/ 30, by way of Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn, from Sufyan al-Thawri, likewise. Reference / Source: Al-Diya' al-Maqdisi narrated it in "al-Mukhtarah" 11/ (396), and al-Dhahabi in "Mizan al-I'tidal" in the biography of Suwayd bin Sa'id, by way of Suwayd bin Sa'id, from 'Ali bin Mushir, from Dawud bin Abi Hind, likewise. The wording is al-Diya''s. Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in his Tafsir 23/ 89 by way of Isma'il Ibn 'Ulayyah and by way of 'Abdullah bin Idris, both from Dawud bin Abi Hind, with the wording: "He was given the glad tidings of his prophethood", without mentioning the two times of the glad tidings. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Mu'tamir bin Sulayman contradicted them (see al-Tabari 23/ 89): he narrated from Dawud bin Abi Hind, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: "He was given the glad tidings of him as a prophet only when Allah ransomed him from the slaughter; the glad tidings of prophethood were not at his birth." Preferred view: This clearly contradicts the narration of Sufyan al-Thawri, and also contradicts the unqualified narrations of Ibn 'Ulayyah and Ibn Idris. And their narration is more firmly established.
