Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3808

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the recitation of Surah al-Rahman to his Companions, he said: "Why is it that I see you completely silent? The jinn were certainly better than you in responding. Whenever I recited this verse to them: "So which of the favours of your Lord will you both deny?" [Surah al-Rahman: 13], they said (in reply): 'Wa la bi shay'in min ni'amika Rabbana nukadhdhibu, fa lakal-hamd' (O our Lord, we do not deny any of Your favours, so all praise is for You)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is, if Allah wills, "hasan li-ghayrihi". There is no harm in the narrators of its chain, except that al-Walid bin Muslim is Damascene, and there is criticism of the Syrians' narration from Zuhayr bin Muhammad al-Tamimi.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, this hadith has a shahid (supporting report) by which it is strengthened, if Allah wills.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (3291) narrated it from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Waqid with this same chain and said: "This hadith is gharib; we know it only through al-Walid bin Muslim from Zuhayr bin Muhammad."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tirmidhi quoted Ahmad bin Hanbal and al-Bukhari as saying that the people of Syria narrate "munkar" reports from Zuhayr.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It has a shahid from the hadith of Ibn 'Umar, found in al-Bazzar's "Musnad" (5853) and al-Tabari's "Tafsir" (27/ 123-124), and its chain can possibly be graded "hasan".
