It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning this saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, "They used to sleep but little of the night" [Surah al-Dhariyat: 17], that he said: "No night passed over them in which they slept until morning without praying in it (that is, they would certainly spend some part of the night in worship)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it, and it also has a supporting narration (shahid) with a connected chain from another route.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This report is "sahih", and this chain is "hasan" because of Ahmad bin Mihran. Al-Hakam is Ibn Utaybah. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (2841) through Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain. Ibn Abi Shaybah (2/ 239) also recorded it from Waki', from Ibn Abi Layla (Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman), from al-Hakam. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (2842) also recorded it via Ubayd Allah bin Musa, from Ibn Abi Layla, from al-Minhal, from Sa'id bin Jubayr. Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is some weakness in the memory of Ibn Abi Layla.
Important point: We could not find this particular supporting report, but al-Dhahabi commented on this statement of the author (al-Hakim) in "al-Talkhis", saying: "It is a very weak (wahin) marfu' hadith!"
