Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3598

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he used to recite this verse (in this way): "The Prophet has a greater claim on the believers than their own selves, and he is a father to them, and his wives are their mothers."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: Manuscript (Z) has "al-Bazzaz" (with dots), while in (S) and ('A) it is undotted. What we have adopted from (B) is "al-Razzaz", and that, Allah willing, is correct, because this Muhammad bin Amr (Abu Ja'far bin al-Bakhtari al-Baghdadi) was well known as "al-Razzaz", as in his biography in al-Dhahabi's "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (15/ 385) and elsewhere. It also comes with this attribution in the author (al-Hakim)'s work later at number (7575); it is an attribution to selling rice. However, it is not unlikely that he was "Bazzar", an attribution to one who extracts oil from seeds or sells them.

Grading: Its chain is da'if jiddan (very weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Talhah (Ibn Amr bin Uthman al-Makki) is matruk (abandoned); al-Dhahabi pointed to this defect in "al-Talkhis" and said: Talhah is "saqit" (discarded).
Note / Clarification: Abu Hudhayfah is Musa bin Mas'ud al-Nahdi, Sufyan is al-Thawri, and Ata' is Ibn Abi Rabah.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (7/ 69) recorded it from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this same chain. In it "Yunus" occurs in place of "Sufyan", which is a corruption.
