It is narrated from Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not reside with the polytheists and do not gather with them; whoever resides with them or gathers with them is not one of us."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is extremely weak (da'if jiddan). Technical note: Its narrator Ishaq bin Idris is "matruk", and some accused him of fabricating (wad') hadiths or stealing them.
Technical note: Nasr bin 'Ata' contradicted (them) in this and mentioned Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), but Nasr is "majhul al-'ayn" (his identity is not established).
Grading: Contrary to all of them, Hajjaj bin Minhal narrated it as "mursal", and this is correct, because Hajjaj is a trustworthy (thiqah) and hafiz narrator.
Supporting reports: Supporting reports for this mursal narration of al-Hasan al-Basri are narrated, which will come later.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it via the author (al-Hakim) with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani narrated it by way of Ishaq bin Idris (an abandoned narrator).
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated it in Tarikh Asbahan by way of Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Malik.
Reference / Source: Aslam bin Sahl narrated it by way of Nasr bin 'Ata', with the mention of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Mundhir narrated it as mursal by way of Hajjaj bin Minhal, and at its end are these words: "Whoever lives with the polytheists and joins them is like them". Its narrators are trustworthy (thiqah), but the mursal narrations of al-Hasan al-Basri are weak.
Supporting reports: In this chapter there is the narration of Jarir bin 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) (Abu Dawud 2645, al-Tirmidhi 1604): "I am free of every Muslim who lives among the polytheists". The Companions asked: Why, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "Their two fires should not be visible to each other" (i.e. there should be that much distance).
