أخبرني أبو القاسم عبد الرحمن بن الحسن القاضي بهَمَذان، حدثنا عُمير بن مِرداس، حدثنا عبد الله بن نافع الصائغ، حدثنا يحيى بن عُمير، عن أبيه عمير مولى نوفل بن عَدِيّ، عن أبي هريرة، أنَّ رسول الله ﷺ قال: "لا يَنامنَّ أحدُكم حتى يقرأَ ثُلثَ القرآنِ" قالوا: يا رسول الله، وكيف يستطيع أحدُنا أن يقرأ بثلثِ القرآنِ؟ قال: "لا يستطيعُ أن يقرأَ ﴿قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ﴾ و ﴿قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ﴾ و ﴿قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ﴾؟ " (1).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "None of you should ever sleep until he has recited a third of the Qur'an." The Companions said: "O Messenger of Allah, how can any of us manage to recite a third of the Qur'an?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is he not able to recite 'Say: He is Allah, the One' [Surah al-Ikhlas: 1], 'Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak' [Surah al-Falaq: 1] and 'Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind' [Surah al-Nas: 1]?"
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) إسناده ضعيف لجهالة عمير مولى نوفل بن عدي فلا يعرف أنه روى عنه غير ابنه، وعبد الرحمن بن الحسن شيخ الحاكم ضعيف، وقد روي الحديث من وجه آخر عن عمير، وهو ضعيف أيضًا.
Grading: Because 'Umayr (the mawla of Nawfal) is majhul and al-Hakim's teacher ('Abd al-Rahman) is da'if, this chain is da'if.
وأخرجه البيهقي في "شعب الإيمان" (2336) عن أبي عبد الله الحاكم، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it through this same chain of Imam al-Hakim.
وأخرجه أبو داود الطيالسي (2601) عن محمد بن أبي حميد الأنصاري، عن عمير، به. ومحمد بن أبي حميد متفق على ضعفه.
Reference / Source: Al-Tayalisi narrated it from Muhammad bin Abi Humayd, who is a narrator agreed to be da'if.
ويخالف هذا الحديث الأحاديث الدالة على أنَّ سورة الإخلاص وحدها تعدل ثلث القرآن، كما تقدَّم برقم (2103) وذكرنا شواهده هناك.
Contradiction: This narration goes against the sahih hadiths in which Surah al-Ikhlas alone is said to equal "a third of the Qur'an".
