It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) (Abu al-Aswad says:) I said to him: "Tell me the story of when you caught the devil." He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) put me in charge of the charity (the dates) of the Muslims. I placed the dates in a room and noticed that some were missing. I informed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the devil taking it." Mu'adh says: I went into the room and shut the door. Then a great darkness came and covered the door, and he appeared in the form of an elephant, then he changed into another form and entered through a crack in the door. I tightened my waist-wrap around me. He began eating the dates, and I leapt at him and seized him firmly. I said: "O enemy of Allah!" He said: "Let me go. I am old, I have a large family, I am poor, and I am from the jinn of Nasibin. This town was ours before your companion (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) was sent; when he was sent, we were driven out of it. Let me go and I will not come back." So I let him go. Jibril (peace be upon him) came and informed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) led the dawn prayer, and his caller called out: "Where is Mu'adh bin Jabal?" I went to him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What did your captive do, O Mu'adh?" I told him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He will come back, so be ready again (to catch him)." I went into the room and shut the door. He again entered through the crack and began eating the dates, and I caught him again. He said: "Let me go, I will not come back." I said: "O enemy of Allah, did you not say before that you would not come back?" He said: "(This time it is a firm promise that) I will not come back, and the sign of it is that whoever among you recites the closing verses of Surah al-Baqarah, none of us will be able to enter his house that night."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. Abd al-Mu'min bin Khalid is a trustworthy narrator from Marw whose hadith is compiled, and Zayd bin al-Hubab also narrated this very hadith from him.

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih; because of Ibrahim bin Hilal the chain is "hasan", and the next chain corroborates it. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" through the chain of Imam al-Hakim. Variation in the chain: Nu'aym bin Hammad narrated it through Ibn Buraydah from his father, but Nu'aym is da'if, so the narration of 'Ali bin al-Hasan and Zayd bin al-Hubab (which is with al-Hakim) is more sahih. Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it by way of Luqman bin 'Amir from Mu'adh bin Jabal. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In al-Bayhaqi's narration via 'Amr bin Marzuq it was made an incident of Buraydah bin al-Husayb, and al-Bayhaqi thought both might be preserved; but 'Amr bin Marzuq erred here, and in reality this is the incident of Mu'adh bin Jabal. (6045). Guidance: See the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas at number (6045). Note / Clarification: "Fa-dabattuhu" means: I seized him with a very firm grip.
