Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1980

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek refuge in Allah from knowledge that does not benefit, from a supplication that is not heard, from a heart that does not humble itself (before Allah), and from a soul that is never satisfied.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih" and all its narrators are thiqah, but there has been a disagreement in its chain over Abu Sinan (Dirar bin Murrah al-Shaybani);
Details of the narration: Sufyan (al-Thawri) narrated it from him, as found in this narration of the author (al-Hakim).
Technical note: A group contradicted Sufyan al-Thawri and narrated it from Abu Sinan, from 'Abd Allah bin Abi al-Hudhayl, from a shaykh of the Nakha' tribe, from 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr. They added the "Nakha'i shaykh" to the chain, who is unnamed (his name is not known); in any case this narration is also reported from 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr through two other routes.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (11/6557) and al-Nasa'i (7825) narrated it through the chain of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi from Sufyan al-Thawri.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it at (6561) through Yazid bin 'Ata' and at (6865) through Khalid bin 'Abd Allah al-Tahhan; both of them narrated it via Abu Sinan, from 'Abd Allah bin Abi al-Hudhayl, from a shaykh of the Nakha'.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: 'Abidah bin Humayd also corroborated them in Ibn Abi Shaybah (10/194).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tirmidhi (3482) narrated it through Zuhayr bin al-Aqmar from 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr bin al-'As.
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is "hasan sahih gharib".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Its third route is found in Imam al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (14577) with the chain of Muhajir bin Habib from 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr. All its narrators are thiqah; if Muhajir's hearing from 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr is established, the chain is "sahih".
