Sayyiduna Malik bin Nadlah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hands are of three kinds: the highest hand is the hand of Allah, next is the hand of the giver (the generous one), and the hand of the one who asks (the beggar) is the lowest. So give what is surplus to your needs, and do not render yourself helpless (by depriving yourself)."
This hadith has a sahih chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it; its supporting narration is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The hadith of Abdullah bin Umar is in al-Bukhari (1429) and Muslim (1033). Important point: "Wa la ta'jiz 'an nafsik" means: when your self holds you back from giving charity, do not give in to it.
