It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sa'd bin Ubadah as a collector of zakah and said: "O Sa'd! Beware of coming on the Day of Resurrection carrying on your neck a camel that is groaning." He said: (If there is such a danger, then) I will not take up this post. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) excused him.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Criticism of a narrator: Nafi' is the freed slave (mawla) of Ibn 'Umar, and Yahya bin Sa'id, who narrates from him, is al-Ansari. Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (3270) narrated it through Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili from Sa'id bin Yahya al-Umawi, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (37/22461) narrated via the route of Humayd bin Hilal from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib from Sa'd bin 'Ubadah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Go and take charge of collecting the zakat of such-and-such a tribe, and take care that you do not come on the Day of Resurrection with a young camel loaded on your neck or shoulder, groaning." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, relieve me of this responsibility," so he (peace and blessings be upon him) relieved him of it.
