Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1244

Ya'la bin Ata narrates from his father, from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both). And Ata bin al-Sa'ib narrates from his father, from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: The sun went into eclipse in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and stood for so long that it was said: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) will not bow." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed, and bowed for so long that it was said: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) will not raise his head." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head and stood for so long that it was said: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) will not bow." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed, and bowed for so long that it was said: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) will not raise his head." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head and stood for so long that it was said: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) will not prostrate." (And he mentioned the rest of the hadith.)
The hadith of (Sufyan) al-Thawri from Ya'la bin Ata is gharib (singular) and sahih (authentic); the two Shaykhs used Mu'ammal bin Isma'il as evidence, but they did not record it. As for Ata bin al-Sa'ib, they did not record from him.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) It is "sahih" on the basis of its chains and supporting reports; Mu'ammal bin Isma'il has been corroborated, and Sufyan al-Thawri heard from 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib before his ikhtilat. The other chain is weak because 'Ata' al-'Amiri is unknown (majhul).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (3/324) narrated it through Imam al-Hakim with both chains.
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (2395) and Ibn Khuzaymah narrated it through Muhammad bin al-Muthanna from Mu'ammal bin Isma'il.
Reference / Source: Abu 'Amir al-'Aqadi corroborated Mu'ammal, as narrated in al-Bayhaqi (3/324).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (11/6868) narrated it through 'Abd al-Razzaq from Sufyan, only via 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (6483), Abu Dawud (1194), al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban narrated it through various chains from 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (7080) narrated it through Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i from al-Sa'ib (the father of 'Ata') from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Jabir on this topic is found in Ahmad (22/14417), Muslim (904) and Abu Dawud.
