Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray three rak'ahs of witr and would sit (for tashahhud) only at the end of them. And this is the witr of the Commander of the Believers, Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and the people of Madinah took it from him.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) The chain is strong (qawi) on account of Shayban bin Farrukh, but Imam al-Bayhaqi declared its wording an "error", because the known narration of Sa'd bin Hisham concerns nine or seven rak'ahs. Reference / Source: al-Bayhaqi (3/28) narrated it through the chain of Imam al-Hakim. Defect ('illah) / Technical note: Al-Bayhaqi says that this narration of Aban (with five rak'ahs) is mistaken, because the other narrations of Sa'd bin Hisham contradict it. (3053). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, a supporting report for this wording exists in the narration of Ubayy bin Ka'b (al-Nasa'i 446), which will come later at no. (3053).
