It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that after the fourth day of Dhul-Hijjah had passed, we set out from Madinah Munawwarah with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the state of Ihram for Hajj. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed us to change our intention to Umrah. This made our hearts somewhat heavy and we felt uneasy about it. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to know of this, he said: "O people! End your Ihram and become lawful (i.e., come out of Ihram). If I had not brought the sacrificial animal with me, I would have done what you are doing." So we did as he instructed, to the extent that we did with our wives whatever a non-Muhrim (one not in Ihram) can do, until when the evening or day of the eighth of Dhul-Hijjah came, we turned our backs to Makkah Mukarramah and set out reciting the Talbiyah for Hajj.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us on a journey with Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him). On the way, our provisions ran out. During this time, we came across a very large fish which the sea had thrown out. We wanted to eat it, but at first Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) forbade us. Then he said that we are messengers of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and have set out in the way of Allah, so eat it. Thus, we ate it for several days, and after returning, we mentioned it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If any part of it is left with you, send it to us as well."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The pens have written it and dried, and the decree has been enforced." He asked, "Then what is the benefit of action?"
