Musnad of Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 1202
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ نَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ عَلِيٍّ لِعَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : أَلَا تُحَدِّثُنَا بِصَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالنَّهَارِ وَالتَّطَوُّعِ ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : إِنَّكُمْ وَاللَّهِ لَا تُطِيقُونَهَا ، فَقَالُوا لَهُ : أَخْبِرْنَا بِهَا نَأْخُذْ مِنْهَا مَا أَطَقْنَا . . . فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ بِطُولِهِ .
Hadith number (650) is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.
Hadith 1203
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ الْجَحْدَرِيُّ فُضَيْلُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ إِمْلَاءً عَلَيَّ مِنْ كِتَابِهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنْ صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالنَّهَارِ ، فَقَالَ : كَانَ " يُصَلِّي سِتَّ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً ، قَالَ : يُصَلِّي إِذَا كَانَتْ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ هَاهُنَا كَهَيْئَتِهَا مِنْ هَاهُنَا كَصَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ، وَكَانَ يُصَلِّي إِذَا كَانَتْ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ هَاهُنَا كَهَيْئَتِهَا مِنْ هَاهُنَا كَصَلَاةِ الظُّهْرِ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ ، وَكَانَ يُصَلِّي قَبْلَ الظُّهْرِ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ ، وَبَعْدَ الظُّهْرِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ، وَقَبْلَ الْعَصْرِ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ " .
Asim bin Damrah reports that once a person asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer voluntary prayers during the day. He replied that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer a total of sixteen rak‘ahs. After performing the Fajr prayer, he would wait for a short while, and when the sun had risen in the east to the extent that it is in the west after the ‘Asr prayer, he would stand and offer two rak‘ahs of prayer. Then he would wait for a short while, and when the sun had risen in the east to the extent that it is in the west after the Zuhr prayer, he would stand and offer four rak‘ahs of prayer. Then, after the sun had passed its zenith, he would offer four rak‘ahs before Zuhr, two rak‘ahs after Zuhr, and four rak‘ahs before ‘Asr.
Hadith 1204
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ ابني محمد بن علي ، عَنْ أَبِيهِمَا مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَاهُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ لِابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، وَبَلَغَهُ أَنَّهُ رَخَّصَ فِي مُتْعَةِ النِّسَاءِ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ " نَهَى عَنْهَا يَوْمَ خَيْبَر ، وَعَنْ لُحُومِ الْحُمُرِ الْأَهْلِيَّةِ " .
Syedna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Syedna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had prohibited Nikah Mut'ah and the meat of domesticated donkeys during the time of the Battle of Khaybar. Syedna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had come to know that Syedna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) permitted Mut'ah with women.
Hadith 1205
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَيَّةَ بْنِ قَيْسٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنَّهُ " تَوَضَّأَ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا ، ثُمَّ مَسَحَ بِرَأْسَهُ ، ثُمَّ شَرِبَ فَضْلَ وَضُوئِهِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى وُضُوءِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَلْيَنْظُرْ إِلَى هَذَا " .
Once, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) washed each part of the body three times while performing ablution, and drank the leftover water from the ablution. Then he said, "Whoever wants to see the way of ablution of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), let him see this."
Hadith 1206
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ شَيْخٍ لَهُمْ يُقَالُ لَهُ : سَالِمٌ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُلَيْلٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : " أُعْطِيَ كُلُّ نَبِيٍّ سَبْعَةَ نُجَبَاءَ مِنْ أُمَّتِهِ ، وَأُعْطِيَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَرْبَعَةَ عَشَرَ نَجِيبًا مِنْ أُمَّتِهِ ، مِنْهُمْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا " .
It is narrated from Abdullah bin Maleel, may Allah have mercy on him, that I heard Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, saying: "All the noble Prophets, peace be upon them, who were sent, each of them was given seven chiefs, ministers, and nobles. Whereas the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was especially given fourteen ministers, chiefs, and nobles, among whom are Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both."
Hadith 1207
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ عُبَادٍ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا مَعَ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، فَكَانَ " إِذَا شَهِدَ مَشْهَدًا ، أَوْ أَشْرَفَ عَلَى أَكَمَةٍ ، أَوْ هَبَطَ وَادِيًا ، قَالَ : سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ ، صَدَقَ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ، فَقُلْتُ لِرَجُلٍ مِنْ بَنِي يَشْكُرَ : انْطَلِقْ بِنَا إِلَى أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ حَتَّى نَسْأَلَهُ عَنْ قَوْلِهِ : صَدَقَ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ، قَالَ : فَانْطَلَقْنَا إِلَيْهِ ، فَقُلْنَا : يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ، رَأَيْنَاكَ إِذَا شَهِدْتَ مَشْهَدًا ، أَوْ هَبَطْتَ وَادِيًا ، أَوْ أَشْرَفْتَ عَلَى أَكَمَةٍ ، قُلْتَ : صَدَقَ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ، فَهَلْ عَهِدَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ إِلَيْكَ شَيْئًا فِي ذَلِكَ ؟ قَالَ : فَأَعْرَضَ عَنَّا وَأَلْحَحْنَا عَلَيْهِ ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى ذَلِكَ ، قَالَ : وَاللَّهِ مَا عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَهْدًا إِلَّا شَيْئًا عَهِدَهُ إِلَى النَّاسِ ، وَلَكِنَّ النَّاسَ وَقَعُوا عَلَى عُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، فَقَتَلُوهُ ، فَكَانَ غَيْرِي فِيهِ أَسْوَأَ حَالًا وَفِعْلًا مِنِّي ، ثُمَّ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ أَنِّي أَحَقُّهُمْ بِهَذَا الْأَمْرِ ، فَوَثَبْتُ عَلَيْهِ ، فَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ أَصَبْنَا أَمْ أَخْطَأْنَا " .
Qais bin ‘Abad says that once we were with Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Whenever he saw a gathering of people, or climbed a hill, or descended into a valley, he would say: «سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ، صَدَقَ اللّٰهُ وَ رَسُوْلُهُ.» I said to a man from Banu Yashkur, “Come, let us ask the Commander of the Faithful what he means by «صَدَقَ اللّٰهُ وَ رَسُوْلُهُ».” So we both went to him and said, “O Commander of the Faithful! We see that whenever you see a gathering, descend into a valley, or climb a hill, you say «صَدَقَ اللّٰهُ وَ رَسُوْلُهُ». Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) tell you something about this?” Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) turned away when he heard our question, but we insisted greatly. When he saw our persistence, he said, “If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told me anything, he told it to the people as well. But the people turned against Sayyiduna ‘Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) until they killed him, and after that, the condition and actions of the people besides me were not any better. Then I also felt that I had a right to the caliphate, so I mounted this ride. Now Allah knows whether we did right or wrong.”
Hadith 1208
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، وَأَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ . ح قَالَ عَبْد اللَّهِ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، وَإِسْرَائِيلُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْنَا عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ تَطَوُّعِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالنَّهَارِ ؟ قَالَ : قَالَ عَلِيٌّ : " تِلْكَ سِتَّ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً تَطَوُّعُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالنَّهَارِ ، وَقَلَّ مَنْ يُدَاوِمُ عَلَيْهَا " .
Asim bin Damrah says that once we asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer voluntary prayers during the day. He replied: Throughout the day, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would offer sixteen rak‘ahs of voluntary prayers, but very few are those who are consistent in them.
Hadith 1208M
حَدَّثَني عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَني أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، قَالَ : وَقَالَ أَبِي قَالَ حَبِيبُ بْنُ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ : يَا أَبَا إِسْحَاقَ ، مَا أُحِبُّ أَنّ لِي بِحَدِيثِكَ هَذَا مِلْءَ مَسْجِدِكَ هَذَا ذَهَبًا .
Habib bin Abi Thabit narrated the previous hadith and said: O Abu Ishaq! I do not like that in exchange for your narration of this hadith, this mosque be filled for me with gold.
Hadith 1209
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : أَمَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " أَنْ أَقُومَ عَلَى بُدْنِهِ ، وَأَنْ أَتَصَدَّقَ بِجُلُودِهَا وَجِلَالِهَا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered me to be present with him at the time of sacrifice, and that I should also distribute the skins and coverings of those camels.
Hadith 1210
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا بْنِ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا مُجَالِدٌ ، عَنْ عَامِرٍ ، قَالَ : حَمَلَتْ شُرَاحَةُ وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا غَائِبًا ، فَانْطَلَقَ بِهَا مَوْلَاهَا إِلَى عَلِيٍّ ، فَقَالَ لَهَا عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : لَعَلَّ زَوْجَكِ جَاءَكِ ، أَوْ لَعَلَّ أَحَدًا اسْتَكْرَهَكِ عَلَى نَفْسِكِ ؟ قَالَتْ : لَا ، وَأَقَرَّتْ بِالزِّنَا ، فَجَلَدَهَا عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَوْمَ الْخَمِيسِ أَنَا شَاهِدُهُ ، وَرَجَمَهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَأَنَا شَاهِدُهُ ، فَأَمَرَ بِهَا فَحُفِرَ لَهَا إِلَى السُّرَّةِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " إِنَّ الرَّجْمَ سُنَّةٌ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَقَدْ كَانَتْ نَزَلَتْ آيَةُ الرَّجْمِ ، فَهَلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ يَقْرَؤُهَا وَآيًا مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ بِالْيَمَامَةِ " .
Imam Sha’bi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sharaha Hamdaniyyah became pregnant, even though her husband was not present. So her master brought her to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It is possible that he is your husband, or perhaps you were forced into this act? But she kept replying “No” to every question. So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) flogged her on Thursday, and on Friday he carried out the punishment of stoning to death, and I was present on both occasions. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered a pit to be dug for her up to her navel, and said that stoning is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the verse of stoning was also revealed. Later, those people of Yamamah who used to recite the verse of stoning and other verses of the Qur’an were destroyed.
Hadith 1211
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ، عَنْ زَائِدَةَ ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ ، عَنْ حَنَشٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا تَقَاضَى إِلَيْكَ رَجُلَانِ ، فَلَا تَقْضِ لِلْأَوَّلِ حَتَّى تَسْمَعَ مَا يَقُولُ الْآخَرُ ، فَسَوُفَ تَرَى كَيْفَ تَقْضِي " ، قَالَ : فَمَا زِلْتُ بَعْدُ قَاضِيًا .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "When two parties come to you, do not judge by listening to only one of them, rather listen to both of them. You will see how you judge." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that after this, I continuously remained in the position of judge.
Hadith 1212
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَهُ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " خَيْرُ نِسَائِهَا مَرْيَمُ بِنْتُ عِمْرَانَ ، وَخَيْرُ نِسَائِهَا خَدِيجَةُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "The best of women is Lady Maryam bint Imran (peace be upon her), and the best of women is Lady Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her)."
Hadith 1213
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ يَعْنِي الصَّنْعَانِيَّ ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يُمَدَّ لَهُ فِي عُمْرِهِ ، وَيُوَسَّعَ لَهُ فِي رِزْقِهِ ، وَيُدْفَعَ عَنْهُ مِيتَةُ السُّوءِ ، فَلْيَتَّقِ اللَّهَ ، وَلْيَصِلْ رَحِمَهُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever likes that his life be prolonged, his sustenance be increased, and he be protected from a bad death, should fear Allah and maintain ties of kinship."
Hadith 1214
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وِتْرٌ يُحِبُّ الْوَتْرَ ، فَأَوْتِرُوا يَا أَهْلَ الْقُرْآنِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people of the Qur'an! Perform Witr, for Allah is Odd and He loves the odd number."
Hadith 1215
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْقَوَارِيرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " مِنْ كُلِّ اللَّيْلِ قَدْ أَوْتَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مِنْ أَوَّلِهِ ، وَأَوْسَطِهِ ، وَآخِرِهِ ، وَانْتَهَى وِتْرُهُ إِلَى آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer Witr in the early, middle, and last parts of the night, however, in the end, he (peace and blessings be upon him) became consistent in offering it in the last part of the night.
Hadith 1216
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ الْحُرِّ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ عُتَيْبَةَ ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ يُدْعَى : حَنَشًا ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " كَسَفَتْ الشَّمْسُ فَصَلَّى عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ لِلنَّاسِ ، فَقَرَأَ : يس أَوْ نَحْوَهَا ، ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِنْ قَدْرِ السُّورَةِ ، ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ ، فَقَالَ : سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ ، ثُمَّ قَامَ قَدْرَ السُّورَةِ يَدْعُو وَيُكَبِّرُ ، ثُمَّ رَكَعَ قَدْرَ قِرَاءَتِهِ أَيْضًا ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ ، ثُمَّ قَامَ أَيْضًا قَدْرَ السُّورَةِ ، ثُمَّ رَكَعَ قَدْرَ ذَلِكَ أَيْضًا ، حَتَّى صَلَّى أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ ، ثُمَّ سَجَدَ ، ثُمَّ قَامَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ فَفَعَلَ كَفِعْلِهِ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الْأُولَى ، ثُمَّ جَلَسَ يَدْعُو وَيَرْغَبُ ، حَتَّى انْكَشَفَتْ الشَّمْسُ ، ثُمَّ حَدَّثَهُمْ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَذَلِكَ فَعَلَ " .
Hanish says that once there was a solar eclipse, so Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up to lead the eclipse prayer. He recited Surah Ya-Sin or a similar surah, then bowed for the duration of the recitation of the surah, then raised his head and said «سَمِعَ اللّٰهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ», and remained standing for the duration of the recitation of the surah and kept supplicating. Then he said takbeer and bowed again for as long as the recitation of the surah, then said «سَمِعَ اللّٰهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ» and stood for the same duration, in this way he performed four bowings, then prostrated and stood for the second rak'ah and performed this second rak'ah in the same way as the first. Then he sat and kept supplicating until the solar eclipse ended. Then he said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had also done the same once.
Hadith 1217
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " لَا يُصَلِّي صَلَاةً إِلَّا صَلَّى بَعْدَهَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray two units of prayer after every obligatory prayer (except Fajr and Asr).
Hadith 1218
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يُوتِرُ فِي أَوَّلِ اللَّيْلِ ، وَفِي أَوْسَطِهِ ، وَفِي آخِرِهِ ، ثُمَّ ثَبَتَ لَهُ الْوَتْرُ فِي آخِرِهِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer Witr in the early, middle, and last parts of the night, however, in the end, he (peace and blessings be upon him) became consistent in offering it in the last part of the night.
Hadith 1219
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ إِذَا جَلَسَ فِي مُصَلَّاهُ بَعْدَ الصَّلَاةِ ، صَلَّتْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ ، وَصَلَاتُهُمْ عَلَيْهِ : اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ ، اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْهُ ، وَإِنْ جَلَسَ يَنْتَظِرُ الصَّلَاةَ ، صَلَّتْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ ، وَصَلَاتُهُمْ عَلَيْهِ : اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ ، اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْهُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a person remains seated on his prayer mat after the prayer, the angels send blessings upon him, and the angels’ blessing is this supplication: O Allah! Forgive him, O Allah! Have mercy on him. In the same way, if he sits waiting for the next prayer, the angels also send blessings upon him, and their blessing is this supplication: O Allah! Forgive him, O Allah! Have mercy on him."
Hadith 1220
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حَكِيمٍ الْأَوْدِيُّ ، أَخْبَرَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " الْوَتْرُ لَيْسَ بِحَتْمٍ ، وَلَكِنَّهُ سُنَّةٌ سَنَّهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Witr does not have definitive proof from the Noble Qur’an like the obligatory prayers, but its obligation is established from the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 1221
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيْدُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامٌ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ عَبِيدَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ الْخَنْدَقِ : " مَا لَهُمْ ، مَلَأَ اللَّهُ بُيُوتَهُمْ وَقُبُورَهُمْ نَارًا كَمَا حَبَسُونَا عَنْ صَلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى حَتَّى غَابَتْ الشَّمْسُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of Khandaq, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "May Allah fill their (the polytheists') houses and graves with fire, for they did not let us perform the Asr prayer until the sun had set."
Hadith 1222
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا زَكَرِيَّا ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : إِنَّكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ : مِنْ بَعْدِ وَصِيَّةٍ يُوصَى بِهَا أَوْ دَيْنٍ سورة النساء آية 12 ، وَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " قَضَى بِالدَّيْنِ قَبْلَ الْوَصِيَّةِ ، وَإِنَّ أَعْيَانَ بَنِي الْأُمِّ يَتَوَارَثُونَ دُونَ بَنِي الْعَلَّاتِ ، يَرِثُ الرَّجُلُ أَخَاهُ لِأَبِيهِ ، وَأُمِّهِ دُونَ أَخِيهِ لِأَبِيهِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) decided that "the payment of the deceased's debt will be made before the execution and implementation of the will," whereas in the Qur'an, the mention of the will comes before the debt, and that "uterine brothers will be heirs but consanguine brothers will not be heirs." A person's full brother will be his heir, but a brother sharing only the father will not be an heir. Benefit: A brother sharing only the mother is called 'ukhiyafi' and a brother sharing only the father is called 'ilati'.
Hadith 1223
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا مِسْعَرٌ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ مَيْسَرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّزَّالِ بْنِ سَبْرَةَ ، قَالَ : أُتِيَ عَلِيٌّ بِإِنَاءٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ ، " فَشَرِبَ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : إِنَّهُ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ أَقْوَامًا يَكْرَهُونَ أَنْ يَشْرَبَ أَحَدُهُمْ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ ، وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَعَلَ مِثْلَ مَا فَعَلْتُ ، ثُمَّ أَخَذَ مِنْهُ فَتَمَسَّحَ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : هَذَا وُضُوءُ مَنْ لَمْ يُحْدِثْ " .
Nazzal bin Sabrah says that once after the Zuhr prayer, a jug of water was brought to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He was in the courtyard of the mosque. He drank that water while standing and said: Some people consider this disliked, but I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) doing it just as you have seen me doing it. Then he wiped with the remaining water and said: The person who is not without ablution, but already has ablution, this is the ablution of such a person.
Hadith 1224
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامٌ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ عَبِيدَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عَلِيٌّ لِأَهْلِ النَّهْرَوَانِ : " فِيْهُمْ رَجُلٌ مَثْدُونُ الْيَدِ ، أَوْ مُودَنُ الْيَدِ ، أَوْ مُخْدَجُ الْيَدِ ، لَوْلَا أَنْ تَبْطَرُوا لَأَنْبَأْتُكُمْ مَا قَضَى اللَّهُ عَلَى لِسَانِ نَبِيِّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِمَنْ قَتَلَهُمْ ، قَالَ عَبِيدَةُ : فَقُلْتُ لِعَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : آنْتَ سَمِعْتَهُ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ ، يَحْلِفُ عَلَيْهَا ثَلَاثًا " .
Once, the mention of the Khawarij was made in the presence of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), so he said: Among them there will be a man who is deformed in creation. If you had not gone to extremes, I would have told you the promise that Allah has made, through the tongue of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), to those who kill them. The narrator says: I asked him, "Did you really hear any statement from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this?" He replied three times, "Yes! By the Lord of the Ka'bah."
Hadith 1225
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ وِتْرٌ يُحِبُّ الْوَتْرَ ، فَأَوْتِرُوا يَا أَهْلَ الْقُرْآنِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people of the Qur'an! Perform Witr, for Allah is Odd and He loves the odd number."
Hadith 1226
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ السَّلُولِيِّ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يُصَلِّي عَلَى أَثَرِ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ مَكْتُوبَةٍ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ، إِلَّا الْفَجْرَ وَالْعَصْرَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray two rak‘ahs after every obligatory prayer except Fajr and ‘Asr.
Hadith 1227
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلِ بْنِ غَزْوَانَ ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " لَا يُصَلِّي صَلَاةً يُصَلَّى بَعْدَهَا ، إِلَّا صَلَّى بَعْدَهَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray two units of prayer after every obligatory prayer (except Fajr and Asr).
Hadith 1228
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ وِتْرٌ يُحِبُّ الْوَتْرَ ، فَأَوْتِرُوا يَا أَهْلَ الْقُرْآنِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people of the Qur'an! Perform Witr, for Allah is Odd and He loves the odd number."
Hadith 1229
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا الْعَوَّامُ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : أَتَانَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ حَتَّى وَضَعَ قَدَمَهُ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ فَاطِمَةَ ، فَعَلَّمَنَا مَا نَقُولُ إِذَا أَخَذْنَا مَضَاجِعَنَا : " ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ تَسْبِيحَةً ، وَثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ تَحْمِيدَةً ، وَأَرْبَعًا وَثَلَاثِينَ تَكْبِيرَةً " ، قَالَ عَلِيٌّ : فَمَا تَرَكْتُهَا بَعْدُ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ : وَلَا لَيْلَةَ صِفِّينَ ؟ قَالَ : وَلَا لَيْلَةَ صِفِّينَ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once, at night, when we had already lain down on our beds, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came, placed his blessed feet between me and Fatimah, and taught us to recite these words after lying down on the bed: "Say Subhan Allah thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah thirty-three times, and Allahu Akbar thirty-four times." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that after that, I never abandoned these words. Someone asked: Not even on the night of Siffin? He replied: Yes! (not even then).
Hadith 1230
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الدَّانَاجِ ، عَنْ حُضَيْنِ بْنِ الْمُنْذِرِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ وَعْلَةَ ، أَنَّ الْوَلِيدَ بْنَ عُقْبَةَ صَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ الصُّبْحَ أَرْبَعًا ، ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ إِلَيْهِمْ ، فَقَالَ : أَزِيدُكُمْ ؟ ! فَرُفِعَ ذَلِكَ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ ، فَأَمَرَ بِهِ أَنْ يُجْلَدَ ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ لِلْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ : قُمْ يَا حَسَنُ فَاجْلِدْهُ ، قَالَ : وَفِيمَ أَنْتَ وَذَاكَ ؟ ! فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ : بَلْ عَجَزْتَ وَوَهَنْتَ ، قُمْ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ فَاجْلِدْهُ ، فَقَامَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ فَجَلَدَهُ ، وَعَلِيٌّ يَعُدُّ ، فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ أَرْبَعِينَ ، قَالَ لَهُ : أَمْسِكْ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " ضَرَبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْخَمْرِ أَرْبَعِينَ ، وَضَرَبَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَرْبَعِينَ وَعُمَرُ صَدْرًا مِنْ خِلَافَتِهِ ، ثُمَّ أَتَمَّهَا عُمَرُ ثَمَانِينَ ، وَكُلٌّ سُنَّةٌ " .
Huzain (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Walid bin Uqbah led the people in the Fajr prayer and performed four rak'ahs instead of two. Then he turned to the people and said, "Perhaps I have increased the number of rak'ahs in the prayer?" This matter was presented before Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him), so he ordered the punishment for drinking wine to be carried out on Walid. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him), "Hasan! Stand up and flog him." He said, "You cannot do this; order someone else to do it." He replied, "In reality, you have become weak and incapable, so Abdullah bin Ja'far! You stand up and carry out the punishment on him." Thus, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) kept flogging him and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) kept counting. When forty lashes were completed, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Stop. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave forty lashes to the one who drank wine, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) also gave forty lashes, but Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave eighty lashes, and both are Sunnah."
Hadith 1231
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى الثَّعْلَبِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي جَمِيلَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنَّ جَارِيَةً لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نُفِسَتْ مِنَ الزِّنَا ، فَأَرْسَلَنِي النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِأُقِيمَ عَلَيْهَا الْحَدَّ ، فَوَجَدْتُهَا فِي الدَّمِ لَمْ يَجِفَّ عَنْهَا ، فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ ، فَقَالَ لِي : " إِذَا جَفَّ الدَّمُ عَنْهَا فَاجْلِدْهَا الْحَدَّ " ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " أَقِيمُوا الْحُدُودَ عَلَى مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that a maidservant of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) committed the sin of adultery. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to carry out the prescribed punishment on her. I saw that her bleeding would not stop, so I came and mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When her bleeding stops, then carry out the prescribed punishment on her. And remember! Carry out the prescribed punishments on your male and female slaves as well."
Hadith 1232
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بُكَيْرٍ النَّاقِدُ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ دَاوُدَ الْخُرَيْبِيُّ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّ الْوَتْرَ لَيْسَ بِحَتْمٍ ، وَلَكِنَّهُ سُنَّةٌ سَنَّهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَوْتِرُوا يَا أَهْلَ الْقُرْآنِ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Witr does not have definitive proof from the Noble Qur’an like the obligatory prayers, but its obligation is established from the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Therefore, O people of the Qur’an! Perform Witr.
Hadith 1233
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ النَّرْسِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " عَفَوْتُ لَكُمْ عَنِ الْخَيْلِ وَالرَّقِيقِ ، فَأَدُّوا صَدَقَةَ الرِّقَةِ مِنْ كُلِّ أَرْبَعِينَ دِرْهَمًا دِرْهَمًا ، وَلَيْسَ فِي تِسْعِينَ وَمِائَةٍ شَيْءٌ ، فَإِذَا بَلَغَتْ مِائَتَيْنِ فَفِيهَا خَمْسَةُ دَرَاهِمَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have exempted you from paying zakat on horses and slaves, therefore you must pay zakat on silver in any case. Its nisab is that for every forty, one dirham will be obligatory. Nothing will be obligatory up to one hundred and ninety dirhams, but when their number reaches two hundred, then five dirhams will be obligatory on it."
Hadith 1234
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، قَالَ : سُئِلَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : كَانَ " يُصَلِّي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ سِتَّ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً " .
Asim bin Damrah reports that once a person asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform voluntary prayers (nawafil). He replied that during the whole night, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform sixteen rak‘ahs of voluntary prayers.
Hadith 1235
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ بْنُ يُونُسَ ، عَنْ ثُوَيْرِ بْنِ أَبِي فَاخِتَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " أَهْدَى كِسْرَى لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَبِلَ مِنْهُ ، وَأَهْدَى قَيْصَرُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَبِلَ مِنْهُ ، وَأَهْدَتْ الْمُلُوكُ فَقَبِلَ مِنْهُمْ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once Chosroes sent a gift to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace be upon him) accepted it. Similarly, Caesar sent a gift and he (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted it as well, and when other kings sent gifts, he (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted those too.
Hadith 1236
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ النَّابِغَةِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْ زِيَارَةِ الْقُبُورِ ، وَعَنِ الْأَوْعِيَةِ ، وَأَنْ تُحْبَسَ لُحُومُ الْأَضَاحِيِّ بَعْدَ ثَلَاثٍ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " إِنِّي كُنْتُ نَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنْ زِيَارَةِ الْقُبُورِ فَزُورُوهَا ، فَإِنَّهَا تُذَكِّرُكُمْ الْآخِرَةَ ، وَنَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنِ الْأَوْعِيَةِ فَاشْرَبُوا فِيهَا ، وَاجْتَنِبُوا كُلَّ مَا أَسْكَرَ ، وَنَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنْ لُحُومِ الْأَضَاحِيِّ أَنْ تَحْبِسُوهَا بَعْدَ ثَلَاثٍ ، فَاحْبِسُوا مَا بَدَا لَكُمْ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) initially forbade visiting graveyards, using specific utensils, and keeping the meat of sacrificial animals for more than three days. Afterwards, he said: "Previously, I forbade you from visiting graveyards, now I permit you, so visit the graveyards, for it reminds one of the Hereafter. I also forbade you from using specific utensils, now you may use them for drinking, but avoid intoxicating things. And I forbade you from keeping the meat of sacrificial animals for more than three days, now you are permitted to keep it for as long as you wish."
Hadith 1237
حَدَّثَنَاه عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ النَّابِغَةِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " عَنْ زِيَارَةِ الْقُبُورِ " ، فَذَكَرَ مَعْنَاهُ ، إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَكُلَّ مُسْكِرٍ " .
The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.
Hadith 1238
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنِ الرُّكَيْنِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ ، عَنْ حُصَيْنِ بْنِ قَبِيصَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ رَجُلًا مَذَّاءً ، فَاسْتَحْيَيْتُ أَنْ أَسْأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ أَجْلِ ابْنَتِهِ ، فَأَمَرْتُ الْمِقْدَادَ ، فَسَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَجِدُ الْمَذْيَ ، فَقَالَ : " ذَلِكَ مَاءُ الْفَحْلِ ، وَلِكُلِّ فَحْلٍ مَاءٌ ، فَلْيَغْسِلْ ذَكَرَهُ وَأُنْثَيَيْهِ ، وَلْيَتَوَضَّأْ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلَاةِ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that discharge of madhiy (pre-seminal fluid) would occur frequently from my body. I felt shy to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this issue myself because his daughter was married to me. So I asked Sayyiduna Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him), and he asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this issue. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "This is the fluid of a man, and it occurs in every strong man. Therefore, when you see madhiy, wash your private part and perform ablution as you do for prayer."
Hadith 1239
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَشْعَثُ بْنُ سَوَّارٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ أَشْوَعَ ، عَنْ حَنَشِ بْنِ الْمُعْتَمِرِ ، أَنَّ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ بَعَثَ صَاحِبَ شُرْطَهِ ، فَقَالَ : أَبْعَثُكَ لِمَا بَعَثَنِي لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَا تَدَعْ قَبْرًا إِلَّا سَوَّيْتَهُ ، وَلَا تِمْثَالًا إِلَّا وَضَعْتَهُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he addressed his companion Hayyan and said: I am sending you for the same task for which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me; do not leave any grave without leveling it, and do not leave any image without erasing it.
Hadith 1240
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " فِيمَا سَقَتْ السَّمَاءُ فَفِيهِ الْعُشْرُ ، وَمَا سُقِيَ بِالْغَرْبِ وَالدَّالِيَةِ فَفِيهِ نِصْفُ الْعُشْرِ " ، قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد الرَّحْمَنِ : فَحَدَّثْتُ أَبِي بِحَدِيثِ عُثْمَانَ ، عَنْ جَرِيرٍ ، فَأَنْكَرَهُ جَدّاً ، وَكَانَ أَبِي لَا يُحَدِّثُنَا ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ لِضَعْفِهِ عِنْدَهُ ، وَإِنْكَارِهِ لِحَدِيثِهِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On land irrigated by rainwater, one-tenth (ushr) is obligatory, and on land irrigated by buckets or waterwheels, half of one-tenth is obligatory."
