Hadith 282
Abu Ubaid says that once, on the occasion of Eid, I was present in the service of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He came and first led the prayer, then turned towards the people and, delivering the sermon, said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade fasting on these days. On the day of Eid al-Fitr, because on that day your fasting ends, and on the day of Eid al-Adha, so that you may eat the meat of your sacrificial animal.

Sayyiduna Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was a man of great protective jealousy. When he would go out for prayer, Atika bint Zaid would also follow behind him. He did not like her going out, but he also did not like to stop her. And he used to narrate this hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "When your women seek permission from you to go to the mosque for prayer, do not stop them."
Hadith 284
Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say that if it were not for the consideration of the Muslims who would come later, then every town and city that was conquered, I would have distributed it among the conquerors just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed Khaybar.

Abu Al-Ajfa’ Salmi says that once I heard Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) repeatedly saying: O people! Do not set high dowries for your wives, because if this was a matter of honor in this world or counted as piety in the sight of Allah, then the Prophet (peace be upon him) would have been the most deserving of it. Yet, the dowry of none of the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) wives or daughters was more than twelve uqiyah. And a man is tested by the dowry of his wife, which later proves to be enmity against himself, and a man even goes so far as to say: I have been forced to bring you even the rope used to tie the mouth of a waterskin. Abu Al-Ajfa’ (the narrator) says: Since I was among those slaves of Arabia who were called “Mawalladeen,” I did not know the meaning of “‘alaq al-qirbah” (the rope used to tie the mouth of a waterskin) until then. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The second thing is that when a person is killed during jihad or dies a natural death, you people say that so-and-so has been martyred, so-and-so departed from this world as a martyr, whereas it is also possible that he had hidden gold or silver in the back of his mount or under the saddle, with which he intended to trade. Therefore, do not say with certainty about anyone that he is a martyr; however, you can say that whoever is killed or dies in the way of Allah (he is a martyr) and will enter Paradise, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say.

Abu Firas says that once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon and said: O people! As long as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was among us, revelation continued to descend and Allah kept informing us about your conditions, so we recognized you accordingly. Now, since the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has departed and the series of revelation has ended, we will now recognize you by those things which we tell you. Whoever among you displays goodness, we will think well of him and love him, and whoever displays evil, we will not think well of him and will dislike him on that basis. Your hidden secrets will be between you and your Lord. Remember! There was a time upon me when I used to think that whoever recites the Noble Qur’an to attain Allah and His blessings, he presents the imagination of the Hereafter before me. Remember! There are some people who seek the wealth and riches of people through the recitation of the Noble Qur’an. You should seek Allah through your recitation, seek Allah through your deeds, and remember! I have not sent my appointed governors to you so that they may flay your skins and seize your wealth and riches. Rather, I have sent them to you so that they may teach you your religion and the Sunnahs of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). If anyone has been dealt with otherwise, he should present it before me. By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, I will surely take retribution for him. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) jumped forward and said: O Commander of the Faithful! If a man is made responsible over the people and he gives some punishment to teach them manners, will you also take retribution from him? He replied: Yes! By the One in Whose Hand is Umar’s soul, I will take retribution from him as well. I have seen the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) himself giving retribution on his own behalf. Remember! Do not humiliate the Muslims by beating them, do not put them on coals so as to put them to trial, do not withhold their rights so as to force them to adopt disbelief, and do not anger them so as to ruin them.
Hadith 287

The narration about not fixing a high dowry, which has just been mentioned, is also reported through another chain of transmission.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Mulaika (may Allah be pleased with him) says that one day we were sitting with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) waiting for the funeral of Sayyiduna Uthman's (may Allah be pleased with him) daughter, Umm Aban. Amr bin Uthman was also there. Meanwhile, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was brought by his guide, perhaps he had informed him about the gathering of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). So he came and sat next to me, and I was between the two of them. Suddenly, the sound of weeping came from the house. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that the deceased is punished because of the weeping of his family over him, and he had this hadith conveyed to the family. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Once we reached the place of Baida with the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), when he saw a man standing under the shade of a tree. He said to me: Go and find out who this man is. I went and found that it was Sayyiduna Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him). I returned and said: You asked me to find out about a certain man; he is Suhaib. He said: Tell him to come to us. I said: His family is with him. He said: Even if his family is with him, bring him. Anyway, a few days after reaching Madinah Munawwarah, the Commander of the Faithful was attacked. When Sayyiduna Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him) found out, he came and upon seeing Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he began to say: Alas, my brother! Alas, my friend! Upon this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said that the deceased is punished because of the weeping of his relatives over him? Abdullah bin Abi Mulaika (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Once I was present in the service of Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) and mentioned to her this statement of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). She said: By Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say that the deceased is punished because of someone’s weeping. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that Allah increases the punishment of the disbeliever because of the weeping of his family. It is Allah who makes one laugh and cry, and it is also a principle that no person bears the burden of another. Ibn Abi Mulaika (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Sayyiduna Qasim (may Allah have mercy on him), the nephew of Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), informed me that when Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) learned of this statement of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and his son, she said: Those from whom you narrate the hadith were neither liars nor can they be rejected, but sometimes a person makes a mistake in hearing.

This narration is also reported through another chain, however, in this version it is also mentioned that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, said to Amr bin Uthman, who was right in front of him, "Why do you not stop these women who are weeping?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The deceased is punished because of the weeping of his family over him."

Malik bin Aws says that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to swear by three things. He used to say: By Allah! No one is more entitled to this wealth than another (rather, all are equally deserving), and I am not more entitled to it than anyone else. By Allah! Every Muslim has a right to this wealth except for the slave who is still owned by his master. However, we will assign ranks according to the Book of Allah and will adopt the method of distribution from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Thus, there is a man who endured great trials for the sake of Islam, a man who is an early convert to Islam, a man who remained in Islam, and a man who remained in need. By Allah! If I live, it will surely happen that a shepherd will come from Mount Sana'a and will take his share from this wealth, and his animals will continue to graze in their place.

Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had appointed Umair bin Saeed as the governor of Homs. On one occasion, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "I am going to ask you a question, do not hide anything from me." He replied: "Whatever I know, I will not hide." He (Umar) asked: "What do you consider to be the most dangerous thing for the Muslim Ummah?" He replied: "Misguiding leaders." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You have spoken the truth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had informed me of this."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), after being wounded in a murderous attack, said, "Bring a physician to me who can tend to my wounds." So, a renowned physician from among the Arabs was called. He gave Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) some nabidh to drink, but it came out from the wound below his navel, and its color had turned red like blood. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that after this, I called a physician from among the Ansar, from the Banu Mu'awiyah. He came and gave him milk to drink, but that too came out from his wound, white and greasy. Upon seeing this, the physician said, "O Leader of the Believers! Now make your will," (meaning, now survival is difficult). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "He has spoken the truth. If you had said anything else, I would not have accepted it from you." Hearing this, the people began to weep. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Do not weep over me. Whoever wishes to weep should go outside. Have you not heard the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the deceased is punished because of the weeping of his family over him?" For this reason, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would not allow mourners to sit with him at the death of his sons or anyone else.
Hadith 295
Amr bin Maymoon says that I heard Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saying that the polytheists would not return before sunrise and would say, "Let Mount Thabeer become bright so that we may attack," whereas the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from Muzdalifah towards Mina before sunrise.

Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once during the time of Prophethood, I passed by Hisham bin Hakim while he was reciting Surah Al-Furqan. He was reciting certain letters in it which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had not taught me. My heart desired to question him right there in the prayer, but after he finished, I dragged him by his cloak and asked, "Who taught you to recite Surah Al-Furqan in this way?" He replied, "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did." I said, "You are lying! By Allah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also taught me this Surah." Saying this, I took his hand and brought him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! You yourself taught me Surah Al-Furqan, but I heard him reciting it in letters which you did not teach me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Umar, let him go." Then he told Hisham to recite, and he recited in the same way as before. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "This Surah was revealed in this way." Then he said to me, "Umar, you also recite." So I recited, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It was revealed in this way as well." Then he said, "Indeed, this Qur'an was revealed upon seven modes of recitation, so recite whatever is easy for you from them."

I wished to question him about it right there in the prayer, then he mentioned the complete hadith.

Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila says that I was once with Sayyiduna Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him), at that time Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was looking at the moon in Jannat al-Baqi when a rider came and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) encountered him. He asked him, "Are you coming from somewhere?" He replied, "From the west." He asked, "Did you see the moon?" He said, "Yes! I have seen the moon of Shawwal." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said Allahu Akbar and declared, "The testimony of one man is sufficient for the Muslims." Then he himself stood up, performed ablution from a vessel containing water, wiped over his leather socks, and led the Maghrib prayer. He said, "I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) doing the same. At that time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing a Syrian cloak with tight sleeves, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took his hands out from under the cloak and wiped over (the socks)."

Abu Lubaid says that a man named Bairah bin Asad set out from a place called Tahiyah with the intention of migration. When he reached Madinah Munawwarah, several days had passed since the Prophet (peace be upon him) had passed away. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him and found him to be a stranger. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: Who are you? He said: I am from Oman. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Alright," and took his hand and brought him to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: He is from the land about which I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say: I know of a city called Oman, on one of its sides flows the sea, and there is an Arab tribe settled there. If my messenger has gone to them, they did not throw any arrow or stone at him.

Abu Uthman Nahdi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I was sitting under the pulpit of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and he was delivering a sermon before the people. Muslim bin Yasar al-Juhani says that someone asked Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about the meaning of this verse: «واذ اخذ ربك من بني آدم من ظهورهم ذرياتهم» So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that I also heard someone asking the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) a similar question, and on that occasion the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied: When Allah Almighty created Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him), after some time He passed His right hand over his back and brought forth his offspring and said: I have created these people for Paradise and for the deeds of the people of Paradise. Then He again passed His hand and brought forth some more of his offspring and said: I have created these people for Hell and for the deeds of the people of Hell. Upon hearing this, a man asked: O Messenger of Allah! Then what is the benefit of action? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When Allah has created a servant for Paradise, He will keep him engaged in the deeds of the people of Paradise until he departs from this world while doing the deeds of the people of Paradise, and by virtue of this he will enter Paradise. And if He has created a servant for Hell, He will keep him engaged in the deeds of the people of Hell until he departs from this world while doing the deeds of the people of Hell, and by their evil he will enter Hell."

Sayyiduna Malik bin Aws bin Al-Hadthan says that once I came with some dinars to exchange gold for silver. On the way, I met Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him). He agreed to exchange silver for my gold and took my dinars, and said, "Wait a moment, our treasurer will be coming from Ghabah." I asked Sayyiduna (may Allah be pleased with him) about the ruling on this, so he said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that buying and selling gold for silver is usury except when it is done hand to hand. Similarly, selling dates for dates is usury except when it is done hand to hand.

Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim says that I came to Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) along with some people from my tribe. He gave two thousand to a man from Banu Tayy, but turned away from me. I came before him, yet he turned away. I approached from the side of his face, but still he turned away. Seeing this, I said, “O Commander of the Faithful! Do you recognize me?” Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) began to laugh, then lay down on his back and said, “Yes! By Allah, I know you. When they were disbelievers, you accepted Islam. When they turned their backs, you turned towards (Islam). When they broke their promises, you fulfilled your pledge. And the very first charity wealth that made the faces of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) brighten was the wealth that came from Banu Tayy, which you yourself brought.” After this, Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), apologizing to him, said, “I have given wealth to those whom poverty and hardship have weakened, and these people are the chiefs of their respective tribes, because they bear the responsibility of representing the rights of their people.”
Hadith 317
Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) once said that now during Tawaf, when Allah has granted honor to Islam and has humiliated and expelled disbelief and the people of disbelief, there is no longer any need for ramal (walking briskly with small steps) and uncovering the shoulders. However, even so, we will not abandon it because we have been doing it since the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Abu Al-Aswad (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I set out towards Madinah Munawwarah. When I arrived there, I found out that a disease had spread there due to which people were dying in large numbers. I was sitting in the gathering of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when a funeral passed by. The people praised the deceased, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It has become obligatory." Then a second funeral passed by, and the people praised that deceased as well. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) again said: "It has become obligatory." A third funeral passed by, and the people spoke ill of that deceased. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) again said: "It has become obligatory." Eventually, I asked: "O Leader of the Believers! What has become obligatory?" He replied: "I only said what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, that for any Muslim for whom four people testify to his goodness, Paradise becomes obligatory for him." We asked: "What if there are three people?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The same ruling applies." We asked about two people, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even if there are two, the same ruling applies." Then we ourselves did not ask about one person.

Hadith 321
Imran bin Hattan asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about silk clothing. He said, "Ask Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) for the answer." Imran asked Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said, "Ask Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both)." He asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), so Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from his respected father that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever wears silk in this world will have no share in the Hereafter."
