Harithah reports that once some people from Syria came to Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "We have acquired some wealth, horses, and slaves. We desire that there be means of purification and self-purification for us in this." Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I will do as my two predecessors did before me." Then he consulted with the noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them), among whom Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was also present. He said, "This wealth is lawful, but on the condition that it is not made into a tax, so that it continues to be collected from people in the future."

Sayyiduna Abu Wa'il says that Sabi bin Ma'bad was from the rural tribe of Banu Taghlib and was a Christian who accepted Islam. He asked the people, "Which is the most virtuous deed?" The people replied, "Jihad in the way of Allah." So he intended to participate in Jihad. Meanwhile, someone asked him, "Have you performed Hajj?" He said, "No!" The person said, "First perform Hajj and Umrah, then participate in Jihad." So he set out with the intention of Hajj, and upon reaching the Miqat, he entered into Ihram for both Hajj and Umrah. When Zaid bin Suhan and Salman bin Rabiah found out, they said, "This person is more misguided than his camel." When Sabi presented himself before Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he mentioned to him what Zaid and Salman had said. Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "You have been guided to the Sunnah of your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." The narrator of the hadith says, "I asked Abu Wa'il, 'Did Sabi himself narrate this to you?' He replied in the affirmative."

Amr bin Maymoon says that once Sayyiduna Farooq-e-Azam (may Allah be pleased with him) led us in the Fajr prayer at Muzdalifah, then he stayed there and said that the polytheists did not return before sunrise, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not adopt this method, after that Sayyiduna Farooq-e-Azam (may Allah be pleased with him) departed from Muzdalifah towards Mina before sunrise.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would call the senior Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), he would also call me along with them and would say to me: "Do not speak until these gentlemen have spoken." In the same way, one day Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called us and said: "Whatever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has said regarding Laylat al-Qadr is also known to you, that you should seek Laylat al-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan. Tell me, in which odd night of the last ten do you think Laylat al-Qadr is?" (It is obvious that every Companion's answer was different; Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him) liked my opinion.)

Once, some people came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "We have come to ask you three questions. What is the ruling on offering voluntary prayers at home? What is the method of performing ghusl after janabah? If a woman is in her 'days' (menstruation), to what extent is a man permitted (to have relations with her)?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "You people seem very intelligent. Since the time I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about these matters, no one has asked me these questions until today, as you have. He said: When a person offers voluntary prayers at home, it is light, so whoever wishes may illuminate his house. Regarding the method of ghusl after janabah, he said: First wash the private parts, then perform wudu, then pour water over the head three times, and then bathe as usual. And regarding a woman in her 'days', he said: Whatever part is above the izar (waist-wrapper), a man may benefit from that."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that I saw Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) in Iraq wiping over his leather socks while performing ablution, and I was greatly surprised and astonished at this. Later, when we gathered in a gathering of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me, “The astonishment you had regarding «مسح على الخفين», ask your father about it.” I mentioned the whole incident to him, so he said, “When Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates a hadith before you, do not reject it, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself used to wipe over leather socks.”
Hadith 88
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over the leather socks (khuffs). Later, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked his father, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), about this matter. He replied: This is correct. When Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates any hadith to you, do not ask anyone else about it.

Once, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the pulpit on Friday to deliver the sermon. He praised Allah, mentioned the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and recalled Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Then he said: I have seen a dream, and it seems to me that the time of my departure from this world is near. In my dream, I saw that a rooster pecked me twice. I remember that the rooster was red in color. I mentioned this dream to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr’s wife, the honorable Sayyida Asma bint Umais (may Allah be pleased with her), and she interpreted it that a non-Arab person will martyr you. Then he said: People are telling me that I should appoint my successor. It is certain that Allah will neither let His religion go to waste nor the caliphate with which Allah sent His Prophet. Now, if my decision is made soon, I am appointing a council of those six people with whom the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was pleased at the time of his passing. When you pledge allegiance to any one of them, listen to him and obey him. I know that some people will try to create discord in the matter of caliphate. By Allah! I have fought with these hands of mine in defense of Islam against such people. These people are enemies of Allah, disbelievers, and misguided. By Allah! I have not left behind any issue more important than the issue of kalalah, about which my Lord has promised me. And by Allah! After accompanying the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), I do not remember that he was ever displeased with me in any matter except the issue of kalalah, in which he was extremely displeased with me, to the extent that he placed his finger on my chest and said: For you, the last verse of Surah An-Nisa, “which was revealed in the heat,” is sufficient in this matter. If I remain alive, I will resolve this issue in such a way that both those who read this verse and those who do not will know the solution. And I make Allah a witness that the governors and rulers I have sent to various cities are only to teach people the religion, to present the Sunnahs of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) before the people, and to present to me those issues for which they have no solution. O people! You eat from two such plants which I consider impure: one is garlic and the other is onion (eating them raw causes bad breath). By Allah! I have seen that if the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) smelled their odor from someone’s mouth, he would order and that person would be taken by hand and expelled from the mosque, and not only that, but he would be escorted to Jannat al-Baqi and then people would return. If anyone wants to eat them, let him cook them to remove their odor. The narrator says that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered this sermon on Friday, and on Wednesday he was attacked.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once I, Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Miqdad bin Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Khaybar to look after our respective properties. When we arrived there, each of us went to his own land. At night, while I was sleeping on my bed, someone attacked me and both my hands were dislocated from the elbows. In the morning, my two companions were informed of this incident. They came and began to ask me, "Who did this?" I said, "I have no idea." They set the bones of my hands in place and took me to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He said, "This is certainly the doing of the Jews." After that, he stood before the people to address them and said, "O people! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made an agreement with the Jews of Khaybar on the condition that we could expel them whenever we wished. Now they have attacked Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and as you know, they have dislocated the joints of his hands. Before this, they did the same to an Ansari as well. We have no doubt that these are their associates; we have no other enemies here besides them. Therefore, whoever has any property in Khaybar should go there, because now I am going to expel the Jews from there." Thus it happened, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) expelled them from Khaybar.

During the sermon, a man came; Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, "Why are you so late in coming for the prayer?" He replied, "As soon as I heard the call to prayer, I performed ablution and came." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Really? Did you not hear the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that when any one of you goes for Friday (prayer), he should perform ghusl (ritual bath)?"

Abu Uthman says that we were in Azerbaijan when a letter from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived, in which it was written: O Utbah bin Farqad! Guard yourself against luxury, wearing silk garments, and adopting the ways of the polytheists, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from wearing silk garments except for a small amount, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) indicated this by raising his finger.

Once, Abu Sinan Duwali (may Allah have mercy on him) presented himself before Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), at that time a group of the earliest Muhajireen were also present before him. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called for a box that had been brought to him from Iraq. When it was opened, a ring was taken out from it. One of Sayyiduna Umar’s sons or grandsons took it and put it in his mouth. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took it back from him and began to weep. Those present asked, “Why are you weeping, when Allah has granted you so many victories, given you dominance over the enemy, and cooled your eyes?” He replied, “I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘When Allah opens the door of the world to a person, He places enmities and hatred among them until the Day of Judgment.’ I fear this very thing.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the chief of the hypocrites, Abdullah bin Ubayy, passed away, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was called to lead his funeral prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went to the funeral and stood to lead the prayer, I turned from my place and stood in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Will you lead the funeral prayer of this enemy of Allah, Abdullah bin Ubayy, who said such and such on such and such a day and such and such on another day?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) began to recount his absurdities. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) kept smiling, but when I persisted, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: "Umar! Step back. I have been given a choice in this matter, and I have chosen one aspect. It has been said to me that whether you seek forgiveness for them or do not seek forgiveness, it is the same for them. Even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will never forgive them. If I knew that seeking forgiveness more than seventy times would grant him forgiveness, I would seek forgiveness for him more than seventy times." After this, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led his funeral prayer, went with the funeral, and stood by his grave until the matter was finished. I was amazed at myself and my boldness, although Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) knew best. By Allah! Only a short while had passed when the following two verses were revealed. «وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ مَاتَ أَبَدًا وَلَا تَقُمْ عَلَى قَبْرِهِ إِنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَمَاتُوا وَهُمْ فَاسِقُونَ» [9-التوبة:84] "If any of the hypocrites dies, never pray the funeral prayer for him, nor stand by his grave. Surely, they disobeyed Allah and His Messenger and died in a state of wickedness." After the revelation of this verse, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) never led the funeral prayer of any hypocrite, nor did he ever stand by the graves of the hypocrites.

Once, Abdullah bin Sa'di (may Allah have mercy on him) came to see Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) during the caliphate of Farooq. When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him, he said: "Are you the one about whom I have been told that you have been entrusted with some responsibility over the public, but when you are given its salary, you express dislike in taking it?" Abdullah says, I replied: "Yes, that is so." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "What is your intention in this?" I replied: "By the grace of Allah, I have horses and slaves and everything, and I am also financially well-off, so I wish that my salary be used for the works of the Muslims." Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do not do so, because once I also wished the same. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to give me something, I would say: 'O Messenger of Allah! There are people more in need than me, please give it to them.' Similarly, once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me some wealth, and as before, I said: 'Please give it to someone more needy than me.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Take it, add it to your wealth, then give charity from it. And remember! If wealth comes to you without your desire and request, then take it, otherwise do not pursue it.'"

Majidah narrates that once in Makkah Mukarramah, I scraped meat off a boy’s bone; he bit my ear with his teeth and tore it off. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us with the intention of Hajj, this matter was presented before him. He said: Take both of them to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him); if the injury inflicted reaches the level of retribution (qisas), then qisas should be taken from him. When we were taken to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and he heard our situation, he said: Yes! This reaches the level of qisas, and he said: Bring a barber to me. When the mention of the barber came, he (Sayyiduna Umar) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: I have given my maternal aunt a slave, and I hope that Allah Almighty will make him a source of blessing for her, and I have forbidden her from making him a barber, a butcher, or a dyer.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that once, before I accepted Islam, I set out with the intention of teasing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but I found out that he had already gone to the mosque before me. I went and stood behind him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began reciting Surah Al-Haqqah. I was amazed at the order and style of the Qur'an. I thought to myself, "By Allah! This man is a poet, just as the Quraysh say." Meanwhile, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the verse: "It is indeed the word of a noble messenger; it is not the word of a poet. Little is it that you believe." Hearing this, I thought to myself, "He is a soothsayer." At that moment, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "Nor is it the word of a soothsayer. Little is it that you take heed. It is a revelation from the Lord of the worlds. If he had made up any sayings in Our name, We would have seized him by the right hand and then severed his aorta, and none of you could have protected him from Us." Hearing these verses, Islam began to firmly take root in my heart.

Shurayh bin Ubaid and Rashid bin Saeed and others say that during the journey to Syria, when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reached a place called "Sargh," he received news that a severe plague had spread in Syria. Upon hearing this, he said: "I have received news that a plague has spread in Syria. My opinion is that if my last moment comes and Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is alive, I will appoint him as my successor. And if Allah questions me about this, asking why I appointed him as the caliph over the Muslim Ummah, I will say that I heard Your Prophet say: 'Every prophet has a trustworthy one, and my trustworthy one is Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah.'" The people did not like this and began to say: "In that case, what will become of the great men of Quraysh, i.e., Banu Fihr?" Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If Abu Ubaidah passes away before my death, I will appoint Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) as my successor. And if Allah asks me why I appointed him as caliph, I will say that I heard Your Prophet say that he will be raised on the Day of Resurrection as a leader among the scholars."

Harith bin Muawiyah Kindi says that once I set out on a journey riding an animal to ask three questions from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). When I reached Madinah Munawwarah, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the reason for my coming. I said that I have come to ask about three matters. He said: What are those three matters? I said that sometimes my wife and I are in a small room, the time for prayer comes, if we both pray there, she is right next to me, and if she stands behind me, she goes out of the room. What should be done in this case? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Hang a cloth between yourself and your wife, then if you wish, she can stand with you and pray. Then I asked about offering two voluntary prayers after Asr: he said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade this. Then I asked him about preaching, that people demand me to deliver sermons? He said: It is up to you. From Sayyiduna Umar’s (may Allah be pleased with him) answer, it seemed that he did not consider it good to directly forbid it. I said: Should I consider your statement as final? He said: I fear that if you start storytelling or preaching, you will begin to consider yourself above them, until a time will come when, while preaching, you will consider yourself to have reached the Pleiades, as a result of which, on the Day of Resurrection, Allah will put you just as much beneath their feet.
Hadith 112
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: Allah forbids you from swearing oaths by the names of your forefathers. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Since I heard the prohibition of this from the tongue of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), I have never sworn such an oath, nor have I mentioned it in conversation or quoted it from anyone.
Hadith 113
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not collect zakat on horses and slaves.

Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) once delivered a speech at "Jabiyah" during a journey and said: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood to deliver a sermon just as I am standing now, and he said: I advise you to treat my companions well, and this command is also for those who come after them, and for those who come after them. After this, lying will become so widespread that a man will be ready to give testimony even before being asked for it. So whoever among you desires a place in Paradise should adhere to the "Jama'ah" (the main body), for the devil is with the lone person and is farther from two. Remember! None of you should sit in seclusion with a woman, for the third among them is the devil. And whoever feels happiness due to his good deed and sorrow due to his bad deed, he is a believer.
Hadith 115
Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say that whoever wants to see the character of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he should look at the character of Amr bin Aswad.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away and after him Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was chosen as the Caliph, and those among the Arabs who could become disbelievers, became so, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): "How can you fight against these people when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'I have been commanded to fight the people until they say La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah). Whoever says La ilaha illallah has protected his life and wealth from me, except for the right of Islam, and his reckoning is with Allah?' Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied upon hearing this: 'By Allah! I will certainly fight those who differentiate between prayer and zakat, because zakat is the due right of wealth. By Allah! If they withhold even a young goat (which they used to give to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), I will fight them for it.' Humrah bin Abd Kilal says that after the first journey to Syria, once again Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) set out towards Syria. When he approached it, he and his companions received the news that a plague had broken out in Syria. The companions said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that you should turn back from here, do not go further. If you go there and indeed the epidemic has spread there, then we will have no way to bring you back from there. So, according to the consultation, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) returned to Madinah Munawwarah. That night, when he camped in the last part of the night, I was the closest to him. When he got up, I also got up behind him. I heard him saying that I had reached near Syria, but these people brought me back from there because the plague had spread there. However, by returning from there, the time of my death cannot be delayed, nor can the message of my death come early. Therefore, now my intention is that if I reach Madinah Munawwarah and complete all the necessary tasks in which my presence is essential, then I will definitely set out towards Syria again and camp in the city of "Hims", because I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: Allah Almighty will raise seventy thousand such servants from it on the Day of Resurrection who will have neither reckoning nor punishment, and the place of their rising will be between the olive trees and the red and soft earth in the middle of its garden.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in the expedition of Tabuk. One day, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sat with his noble companions to relate a hadith and said: "Whoever stands at the time of the sun's zenith, performs ablution thoroughly and prays two rak'ahs, all his sins will be forgiven as if his mother has given birth to him today." Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Praise be to Allah who granted me the opportunity to hear this instruction from the blessed tongue of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting in that gathering in front of Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: Are you amazed at this? Before you came, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said something even more amazing. I said: May my parents be sacrificed for you, what was that? He said that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever performs ablution thoroughly, then raises his gaze towards the sky and says «اشهد ان لا اله الا الله وحده لا شريك له واشهد ان محمدا عبده ورسوله», the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him, and he may enter Paradise through whichever gate he wishes."
