Ash'ath bin Qais says that once I invited Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), his respected wife stopped him from attending the invitation, which displeased him and he hit his wife. Then he said to me, "Ash'ath! Remember three things which I have remembered after hearing them from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Do not ask any man why he hit his wife. Do not sleep without offering Witr prayer. I have forgotten the third thing."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed some things. I said, "O Messenger of Allah! The people of Suffa were more deserving of these than those who received them." (Benefit: The meaning is that if I did not give anything to the people of Suffa, it was not because I kept something back for myself, and if I gave to others, it was because I considered their needs.)

Sayyiduna Abu Rafi’ says that in the last days of his life, once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting reclining with Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), and at that time Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) and Sayyiduna Sa’id bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) were also present. He said: “You should know that I have not adopted any opinion regarding kalalah, nor have I nominated anyone as a caliph after me, and that after my death, all the Arab captives will be freed in the way of Allah.” Sayyiduna Sa’id bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “If you would at least advise about any Muslim regarding the caliphate, people would trust you, just as previously Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) did, and people trusted him as well.” Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Actually, I see a bad greed among my companions, so I do not do so. However, I place this burden upon those six men with whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was pleased at the time of his death. Choose whomever you wish from among them as caliph.” Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “If even one of these two men were present and I handed over the caliphate to him, I would be satisfied: one is Salim, who was the freed slave of Abu Hudhaifah, and the other is Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah.”

Farukh says that one day, during his caliphate, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) left his house to go to the mosque. On the way, he saw grain in several places. He asked: "What kind of grain is this?" People informed him that it had been imported. He said: "May Allah bless it and also bless the person who imported it." People said: "O Commander of the Faithful! This is hoarded goods." He asked: "Who has hoarded it?" People informed him that it was Farukh, the slave of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and another of your slaves. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) summoned both of them and said: "Why have you hoarded the food supplies of the Muslims?" They replied: "O Commander of the Faithful! We buy and sell with our own money (therefore, we have authority over what we own, and can sell it whenever we wish)." He said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever hoards the food supplies of the Muslims, Allah will afflict him with poverty and leprosy.'" Upon hearing this, Farukh immediately said: "O Commander of the Faithful! I promise Allah and you that I will not do this again." But the slave of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) insisted on his point, saying: "We buy and sell with our own money (therefore, we should have the right)." Abu Yahya says that later, when I saw him, he had been afflicted with leprosy.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saying that if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to give me something, I would say, "O Messenger of Allah! There are people more in need than me, please give it to them." In the same way, once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me some wealth, and as before, I said, "Please give it to someone more needy than me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take it, increase your wealth with it, then give it in charity. And remember! If wealth comes to you without your desire and request, then take it, otherwise do not pursue it."

Abu Al-Aswad (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I set out towards Madinah Munawwarah. When I arrived there, I found out that a disease had spread, due to which people were dying in large numbers. I was sitting in the gathering of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when a funeral passed by. The people praised the deceased, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It has become obligatory." Then a second funeral passed by, and the people praised that deceased as well. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) again said: "It has become obligatory." A third funeral passed by, and the people spoke ill of that deceased. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It has become obligatory." Eventually, I asked, "O Leader of the Believers! What has become obligatory?" He replied: "I only said what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, that for any Muslim for whom four people testify to his goodness, Paradise becomes obligatory for him." We asked, "What if there are three people?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The same ruling applies." We asked about two people, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The same ruling applies for two." Then we ourselves did not ask about one person.

People asked Sayyiduna Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) about this issue, so he narrated this hadith of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) through his father Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you find stolen spoils of war among a person's belongings, burn those belongings with fire," and perhaps he also said, "Beat that person." So the people took out his belongings and placed them in the market, and among them a Qur'an was also found. The people asked Salim about it, so he said, "Sell it and give its price in charity."

The Muslim man whose faith is strong, who faces the enemy, and fulfills the word of Allah until he is martyred—he is the one whom people will look up to on the Day of Resurrection, raising their necks to see him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) himself raised his head to demonstrate this, until his cap fell off. The Muslim man whose faith is strong, who faces the enemy, and it feels as if thorns have been pricked into his body, then suddenly an arrow comes from somewhere and he is martyred—he will be in the second rank. The Muslim man whose faith is strong, but he has done both good and bad deeds, and when he faces the enemy, he fulfills the word of Allah until he is martyred—he will be in the third rank.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: There are four types of martyrs. The Muslim man whose faith is strong, he faces the enemy and proves the word of Allah true until he is martyred—this is the man whom people will raise their necks to look at on the Day of Resurrection, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) himself raised his head to demonstrate this until his blessed cap fell off. The Muslim man who faces the enemy and feels as if thorns have been pricked into his body, suddenly an arrow comes from somewhere and he is martyred—he will be in the second rank. The Muslim man who has done both good and bad deeds, when he faces the enemy, he proves the word of Allah true until he is martyred—he will be in the third rank. The Muslim man who has greatly wronged himself, he faces the enemy, proves the word of Allah true, and is martyred—he will be in the fourth rank.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man who was performing ablution for the Zuhr prayer. While making ablution, he left a spot on the back of his foot the size of a fingernail, meaning he did not wash it or water did not reach there. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Qur’anic verse «ولا تجهر بصلاتك ولاتخافت بها» was revealed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in hiding in Makkah Mukarramah. He also says that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led his companions in prayer, he would recite the Qur’an aloud. When the polytheists heard that voice, they would begin to speak ill of the Qur’an itself, the One who revealed the Qur’an, and the one who brought the Qur’an. On this occasion, this verse was revealed: Do not recite aloud so that the polytheists hear and begin to speak ill of the Qur’an itself, nor recite so quietly that your companions cannot hear it, but rather adopt a middle course.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up to deliver a sermon. After praising and glorifying Allah, he began to mention the punishment of stoning and said: Do not be deceived regarding stoning; it is one of the punishments prescribed by Allah. Remember! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also implemented the punishment of stoning, and after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we too continued to implement this punishment. If people did not say that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) has added to the Qur'an and included something in it that is not from the Book of Allah, I would have written this verse on the margin of the Noble Qur'an. Remember! Sayyiduna Umar ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) is a witness to the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) implemented the punishment of stoning, and after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we too implemented this punishment. Remember! After you, some people will come who will deny stoning, will deny the Dajjal, intercession, and the punishment of the grave, and will deny the existence of that group who, after being burned to coal in Hell, will be taken out from it.

(Second) Once I submitted in the presence of the Messenger of Allah, "O Messenger of Allah! (Third) Once all the pure wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) united on a certain matter, I said to them, "If the Prophet (peace be upon him) divorces you, it may be that his Lord will give him wives better than you." He recited some words in it which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had not taught me. At that time, I was performing prayer, and I wished to question him right there in the prayer. However, after finishing, I asked him, "Who taught you to recite Surah Al-Furqan in this way?" He replied, "The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did." I said, "You are lying! By Allah, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not teach you this Surah in this manner." Saying this, I took hold of his hand and dragged him to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! You yourself taught me Surah Al-Furqan, and I have heard him reciting it in words which you did not teach me?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) told Hisham to recite it. He recited it in the same way as before. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "This Surah was revealed in this way." Then he said to me, "Umar, you also recite." So I recited it. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "This Surah was also revealed in this way." Then he said, "Indeed, this Qur'an has been revealed upon seven modes of recitation."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying in the valley of Aqiq: "Tonight a messenger came to me from my Lord and said, 'Pray in this blessed valley and enter into the state of Ihram with the intention of both Hajj and Umrah.'" The place referred to is Dhu'l-Hulayfah.
