Musnad Ahmad

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Abu Juham bin Hudhaifah to a region to collect zakat. There, a man argued with Abu Juham regarding the payment of zakat. Abu Juham struck him and he was injured. The people of that tribe came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Grant us retribution (qisas)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Leave your demand for retribution, I will give you such-and-such wealth." But they were not satisfied. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) increased the amount, but still they were not satisfied. However, when he increased it a third time, they agreed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Shall I inform the people about your consent?" They said, "Yes, certainly." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon and said, "The people of this tribe came to me with a request for retribution. I have offered them such-and-such wealth and they have agreed." Then he asked them, "Are you satisfied?" They denied it. At this, the Muhajireen became very angry, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them to stop, and they stopped. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called them and increased the amount further and said, "Are you satisfied now?" They said, "Yes!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Shall I inform the people about your consent?" They said, "Yes, certainly." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon and asked them, "Are you satisfied?" They said, "Yes!"

Umm al-Mu’minin Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the first form of revelation to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began with true dreams; whatever dream he saw would come true as clearly as the bright morning. After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became fond of seclusion and would go to the cave of Hira and adopt solitude. He (peace and blessings be upon him) would remain there engaged in worship for several days at a time, not coming home at all during that period. But when his food and drink would run out, he would return home, take provisions for the same number of days, and go back. Eventually, revelation descended upon him in that very cave of Hira. An angel came and said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "Read!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "I am not learned." (The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, says) Upon hearing this, the angel seized me and pressed me so hard that I became exhausted, then released me and said, "Read!" I said, "I am not learned." He again seized me and pressed me so hard that I lost all strength, then released me and said, "Read!" I said, "I am not learned." For the third time, he pressed me so forcefully that I became helpless, and finally released me and said, "Read in the name of your Lord who created (everything), created man from a clot of blood. Read, and your Lord is Most Generous." (Umm al-Mu’minin narrates) When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned home reciting these words, his heart was trembling. He went to Hazrat Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said, "Cover me with a blanket." Hazrat Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) covered him with a cloth. When his restlessness subsided and his heart was at ease, he narrated the entire incident to Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said, "I fear for my life." Hazrat Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) replied, "By Allah! This can never happen. You should not worry at all. Allah will never forsake you, for you maintain good relations with your relatives, help the needy, support the weak, are hospitable to guests, and assist people in their rightful needs." After this, Hazrat Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) took the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to Waraqah bin Nawfal. Waraqah had adopted Christianity during the period of ignorance and used to write the Gospel in Hebrew, having translated it from Syriac. He was very old and blind. Hazrat Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to him, "O cousin, listen to your nephew’s condition!" Waraqah asked, "Nephew, what has happened?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated to him what he had seen. When Waraqah had heard everything, he said, "This is the same angel (Namūs) whom Allah sent to Musa (peace be upon him). I wish I were young in the time of your prophethood! I wish I were alive when your people will drive you out!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "Will they drive me out?" Waraqah replied, "Yes! No one has ever brought what you have brought without being opposed. If I am alive at that time, I will give you strong support." But a few days later, Waraqah passed away, and the chain of revelation ceased. Due to the cessation of revelation, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became so grieved that he intended several times to throw himself from the tops of mountains. But whenever he would reach the peak with this intention, Jibreel (peace be upon him) would appear before him and say, "O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! You are indeed the true Messenger of Allah." At this, the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) passion would subside, his heart would be at peace, and he would return. When a long period would pass, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would do the same again, and Jibreel (peace be upon him) would comfort him.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that once on the day of Eid, some Abyssinians were performing acrobatics in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I rested my head on the shoulder of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and began to watch them by peeking out. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) lowered his shoulder for me, I kept watching them, and when I was satisfied, I returned.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that I used to play with dolls, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would send my friends to me and they would play with me.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that one day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The Jews should know that there is great flexibility in our religion, and I have been sent with the pure religion of Hanifiyyah.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed any prayer, he would do it regularly, and the prayer he liked the most was the one performed regularly, even if it was little in amount. And he used to say that Allah does not get tired, but you will surely get tired.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fasting abundantly in the month of Sha'ban; I did not see him fasting so much in any other month. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to fast almost the entire month, leaving only a few days.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when we had performed the rites of Hajj and reached the place of Hasba to depart, I said, "O Messenger of Allah! Will your companions return with both Hajj and Umrah, while I return with only Hajj?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent my brother with me, and I performed Umrah. Then I met the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at night while he was ascending the upper part of Makkah and I was descending.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to kiss her while he was fasting and would suck her tongue.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that in the beginning, two rak'ahs of prayer were made obligatory; later, according to the command of Allah, the Prophet (peace be upon him) increased the prayer in residence, and left the prayer during travel as it was, i.e., two rak'ahs.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that I used to play with dolls, my friends would come and join me in play, and as soon as they saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) coming, they would hide. The Prophet (peace be upon him) would then send them back to me and they would start playing with me again.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that a woman came to her and said, "My daughter has recently gotten married, she has fallen ill and her hair is falling out. Can I have other hair attached to her head?" She replied that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed both the one who attaches hair and the one who has it attached.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution, he would also run his fingers through his beard.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that sometimes the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would be praying at home and the door would be closed. When I would come, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would walk over, open the door for me, and then return to his place and stand there. Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) also mentioned that the door was in the direction of the Qiblah.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would observe i'tikaf and would extend his head out from the mosque, and I would comb it while I was menstruating.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform ablution with about one mudd of water and would perform ghusl with about one sa’ of water. The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.

Yazid said: "The amount of a mudd." Yazid said, from Safiyyah bint Shaybah or Mu'adhah, Yazid narrated to us, he said: Hammam informed us, from Qatadah, from Safiyyah bint Shaybah, and he said: "The amount of a mudd, and the amount of a sa’."

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform ablution with about one mudd of water and would perform ghusl with about one sa’ of water.

Muhammad bin Ali says that Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) used to take loans from people. Someone asked her, "Why do you take loans?" She replied, "I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that whoever intends to repay a loan, Allah’s help remains with him. I wish to attain that help."

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade nabidh (fermented drink) made in a pitcher.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he would sit only for as long as it took to say: O Allah! You are the Source of peace, from You comes peace, O Possessor of majesty and honor! You are very blessed.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to be intimate with any of us and she was in her menstrual period, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would be intimate with his wives over the lower garment. And when he wanted to sleep in a state requiring ghusl (ritual bath), he would perform ablution as for prayer.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that I and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform ghusl of janabah from the same vessel of water.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had seen the condition of the women of today, he would surely have forbidden them from coming to the mosques, just as the women of Bani Israel were forbidden.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform the (Sunnah of Fajr) so briefly that I would say, "Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) even recite Surah Al-Fatiha or not?"

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) observed i'tikaf, he would only enter the house due to a human need, and he would extend his head out from the mosque, and I would wash it while the door frame stood between me and him.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she washed the seminal fluid from the clothes of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to lead the prayer, and I could see the marks of water on his clothes.

Sa’d bin Hisham, may Allah have mercy on him, says that once I reached Madinah Munawwarah and presented myself before Hazrat Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her. She asked me, “Who are you?” I replied, “Sa’d bin Hisham.” She said, “May Allah send His mercy upon your father.” I said, “Tell me about the (night) prayer of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.” Hazrat Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would lead the people in the ‘Isha prayer, then come to his bed. In the middle of the night, he would wake up, perform ablution, enter the mosque, and pray eight rak’ahs with equal recitation, bowing, and prostration. Then he would pray one rak’ah of witr, then while sitting, he would pray two rak’ahs, then lay his head down and rest. Sometimes, before he would doze off, Hazrat Bilal, may Allah be pleased with him, would come and inform him of the prayer. This continued in the same way until, when the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, became heavy in body and advanced in age, he reduced the eight rak’ahs to six, but the rest of the routine remained the same.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform two rak'ahs after the 'Isha prayer and then go to sleep. When he would wake up, the water for ablution would be covered and the miswak would be near him. He would use the miswak and perform ablution, and then pray eight rak'ahs. In these rak'ahs, he would not sit except after the eighth rak'ah, and he would remember Allah, praise Him, and supplicate to Him. Then he would stand up without saying salam, and perform the ninth rak'ah. Then he would sit, remember Allah, praise Him, and supplicate to Him, and then he would say salam, making the salam audible to us. After saying salam, he would pray two rak'ahs while sitting, so these became eleven rak'ahs. Then, when the age of Allah's Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) increased and his blessed body became heavier, he started praying seven rak'ahs of witr, and two rak'ahs in the same manner as previously described, so these became nine rak'ahs, and the prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained like this until his passing. The previous hadith is also narrated from this second chain.

Yunus narrated to us, he said: Imran ibn Yazid al-‘Attar narrated to us, from Bahz ibn Hakim, from Zurara ibn Awfa, from Sa‘d ibn Hisham, he said: I said to the Mother of the Believers Aisha: How was the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, at night? She said: "He used to pray the ‘Isha prayer, then he mentioned the hadith, and he would pray two rak‘ahs standing, raising his voice as if he was waking us up, rather he would wake us up, then he would supplicate with a supplication that we could hear, then he would give the salutation, a salutation with which he would raise his voice."

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him, and whoever dislikes to meet Allah, Allah dislikes to meet him. And before meeting Allah, there is death.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had the best character among all people; he was neither indecent in action or speech, nor did he raise his voice in the markets, and he did not repay evil with evil, rather he would forgive and overlook.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that I used to apply the best perfume I had to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it is as if that scene is still before my eyes that I would see the shine of musk on the head of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was in the state of Ihram. And I used to twist the collars of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) animal, that is, the goat, and even after sending it, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not prevent himself from being with any woman.

Abdullah bin Shaqiq (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about the voluntary prayers of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so she said that in the night prayer, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand for a long time and sit for quite a while; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite, bow, and prostrate while standing, and he would also recite, bow, and prostrate while sitting.

Masruq says that once I was sitting reclining at the house of Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), (I asked her, does Allah Almighty not say, "Indeed, the Messenger saw him at the clear horizon," and that, "The Messenger saw him another time as he descended"?), she replied, O Abu Aisha! I was the first to ask the Prophet (peace be upon him) about this, and he said that it refers to Hazrat Jibreel (Gabriel), whom I saw in his real form only twice. Once I saw him descending from the sky, and his great physical form filled the space between the sky and the earth.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that some women from Basra came to her, so she instructed them to perform istinja with water and said: "Order your husbands to do the same, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to perform istinja with water."

The details of the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) bath are narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) as follows: The Prophet (peace be upon him) would first perform ablution as for prayer, then wash his private parts and feet, rub his hand on the wall and pour water over it, as if I can still see the mark of his hand on the wall.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not leave in his house any cloth on which there was a sign of a cross, until he would remove it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would enter his house at night, the first thing he would do was use the miswak, and when he would leave the house, the last thing he would do before leaving was to perform the two rak'ahs before Fajr.
