(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ الْخَيَّاطُ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ : أَنَّ عُمَرَ زَادَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ مِنَ الْأُسْطُوَانَةِ إِلَى الْمَقْصُورَةِ ، وَزَادَ عُثْمَانُ ، وَقَالَ عُمَرُ : لَوْلَا أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " نَبْغِي أَنْ نَزِيدُ فِي مَسْجِدِنَا " ، مَا زِدْتُ فِيهِ .
Nafi' reports that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had an extension made in the Prophet's Mosque from the pillar to the noble enclosure, and later Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) also increased its structure in his expansion. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that if I had not heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying that we wish to further expand the structure of this mosque, I would never have made any addition to it.
