Musnad Ahmad 17048 — The remainder of the hadith of Zayd ibn Khalid
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَرْبٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ شَدَّادٍ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَوْلَا أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي ، لَأَمَرْتُهُمْ بِالسِّوَاكِ عِنْدَ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ " ، قَالَ : فَكَانَ زَيْدُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ يَضَعُ السِّوَاكَ مِنْهُ مَوْضِعَ الْقَلَمِ مِنْ أُذُنِ الْكَاتِبِ ، كُلَّمَا قَامَ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ اسْتَاكَ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If I did not fear hardship for my ummah, I would have commanded them to use the miswak at every prayer time. For this reason, Sayyiduna Zaid bin Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) used to keep the miswak on his ear just as a scribe keeps his pen, and when he stood for prayer, he would use the miswak.
