Who Was the First to Perform Certain Actions?
Hadith 38720
٣٨٧٢٠ - حدثنا يزيد عن أشعث عن أبي إسحاق أن عليًا قال: أول الوضوء المضمضة والاستنشاق (١).
Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the first part of ablution is rinsing the mouth and putting water into the nose.
Hadith 38721
٣٨٧٢١ - حدثنا ابن مبارك عن معمر عن الزهري قال: أرى أن يترك البيع عند الأذان الأول، أحدثه عثمان ﵁ (١).
Hazrat Zuhri says that at the time of the first adhan, trade should be abandoned. This adhan was initiated by Hazrat Usman.
Hadith 38722
٣٨٧٢٢ - حدثنا وكيع حدثنا الأعمش عن أبي صالح عن كعب قال: بدأ اللَّه تعالى بخلق السماوات يوم (الأحد) (١) فالأحد (والأثنان) (٢) والثلاثاء والأربعاء والخميس والجمعة وجعل كل يوم ألف سنة.
Hazrat Ka'b states that Allah Almighty began the process of creating the heavens and the earth on Sunday: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. And He made each day equal to a thousand years.
Hadith 38723
٣٨٧٢٣ - حدثنا أبو معاوية عن الأعمش عن عبد اللَّه بن مرة عن مسروق عن عبد اللَّه قال: قال النبي ﷺ: "لا تقتل نفس ظلمًا إلا كان على ابن آدم الأول كفل من دمها؛ لأنه كان أول من سن القتل" (١).
Hazrat Abdullah says that whenever any soul is killed unjustly, the sin of it will be upon the neck of Adam's son, because he was the first to establish this crime.
Hadith 38724
٣٨٧٢٤ - حدثنا كثير عن جعفر عن ميمون لما نزلت هذه الآية: ﴿وَالَّذِينَ يَرْمُونَ الْمُحْصَنَاتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَأْتُوا بِأَرْبَعَةِ شُهَدَاءَ فَاجْلِدُوهُمْ ثَمَانِينَ جَلْدَةً وَلَا تَقْبَلُوا لَهُمْ شَهَادَةً أَبَدًا﴾ [النور: ٤]، قال رجل: أن رأى رجل في أهله ما يكره (فذهب) (١) (٢) يجمع أربعة فرغ الرجل من حاجته، وإن ذكر ذلك جلد، ولم (تقبل) (٣) له شهادة، وكان من الفاسقين، فانزلت آية التلاعن، فكان ذلك الرجل الذي قال ما قال (أول) (٤) من ابتلي بهذا، ونزلت آية التلاعن (٥).
Hazrat Maymun states that when this verse of the Holy Qur'an was revealed { وَالَّذِینَ یَرْمُونَ الْمُحْصَنَاتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ یَأْتُوا بِأَرْبَعَۃِ شُہَدَائَ فَاجْلِدُوہُمْ ثَمَانِینَ جَلْدَۃً وَلاَ تَقْبَلُوا لَہُمْ شَہَادَۃً أَبَدًا }, a man said that if someone sees his wife in a situation that is unbearable for him, should he go and gather four men? By then, the man would have finished his act. And if he mentions this matter, he will be flogged, his testimony will not be accepted, and he will be counted among the transgressors. Upon this, the verse of Li'an was revealed. The man who had raised this issue was the first to be subjected to the ruling of Li'an.
Hadith 38725
٣٨٧٢٥ - حدثنا سهل عن عمرو عن الحسن قال: أول من مات آدم.
Hasan says that the first human to pass away was Hazrat Adam.
Hadith 38726
٣٨٧٢٦ - حدثنا وكيع حدثنا إسرائيل عن جابر عن أبي جعفر أن النبي ﷺ كان ينزل الأبطح أول ما يقدم (١).
Hazrat Abu Ja'far narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, he would first stay in the valley of Abtah.
Hadith 38727
٣٨٧٢٧ - حدثنا ابن مسهر عن محمد بن عمرو عن أبي سلمة عن عائشة عن فاطمة أن النبي ﷺ قال لها: "أنت أول أهلي لحوقا بي فضحكت لذلك" (١).
It is narrated from Hazrat Fatimah that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me that you will be the first to join me. Upon hearing this from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, I smiled.
Hadith 38728
٣٨٧٢٨ - حدثنا أبو الأحوص عن مغيرة عن إبراهيم قال: كان عبد اللَّه لا يقنت في الفجر (١)، (وأول من قنت فيها علي) (٢) وكانوا يرون أنه إنما فعل ذلك ⦗١٨٢⦘ (لأنه) (٣) كان محاربا (٤).
Ibrahim states that Abdullah did not recite the Du'a Qunoot in the Fajr prayer. It was first started by Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) began reciting the Du'a Qunoot because he was engaged in battle.
Hadith 38729
٣٨٧٢٩ - حدثنا أبو أسامة عن الفزاري عن الأوزاعي قال: الإقامة أول الصلاة.
Hazrat Awza'i says that the Iqamah is the beginning of the prayer.
Hadith 38730
٣٨٧٣٠ - حدثنا شيخ لنا عن جعفر عن أبيه قال: أول من جعل مدي حنطة في زكاة الفطر عدل صاع من تمر عثمان بن عفان (١).
Hazrat Abu Ja'far says that in Sadaqat al-Fitr, equating two mudd of wheat to one sa' of dates was first established by Hazrat Uthman.
Hadith 38731
٣٨٧٣١ - حدثنا الثقفي عن يونس عن الحسن أن النبي ﷺ قال: "أنا سيد ولد آدم، وأول من تنشق عنه الأرض وأول شافع" (١).
It is narrated from Hasan that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I am the leader of the children of Adam. My grave will be opened first and I will be the first intercessor.
Hadith 38732
٣٨٧٣٢ - حدثنا ابن علية عن يونس عن ابن سيرين قال: (نبئت) (١) أن أول جدة أطعمت مع ابنها: أم الأب (٢).
Hazrat Ibn Sirin says that I have been informed that the first grandmother who was given a share in inheritance along with her son was a grandmother. (She was given one-sixth from the inheritance while her son was alive.)
Hadith 38733
٣٨٧٣٣ - حدثنا السهمي حدثنا حميد قال: سألت الحسن: من أول من خطب قبل الصلاة؟ فقال: عثمان بن عفان صلى بالناس ثم خطبهم فرأى ناسًا كثيرًا لم يدركوا الصلاة، ففعلوا ذلك (١).
Hazrat Humaid says that I asked Hasan, "Who was the first to deliver the sermon before the prayer?" He replied, "Hazrat Uthman bin Affan. He led the people in prayer, then delivered the sermon, then he saw that many people had missed the prayer, so he did it that way. And the caliphs after him also did the same."
Hadith 38734
٣٨٧٣٤ - حدثنا يزيد والسهمي (عن حميد) (١) عن أنس عن النبي ﷺ قال: "أول أشراط الساعة نار (تحشر) (٢) الناس من المشرق إلى المغرب، وأما أول طعام ⦗١٨٣⦘ يأكله أهل الجنة (فزيادة) (٣) كبد حوت" (٤).
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The very first sign of the Day of Judgment will be a fire that will appear from the East towards the West. And the first food that the people of Paradise will eat will be the liver of fish.
Hadith 38735
٣٨٧٣٥ - حدثنا ابن بشر قال: حدثنا محمد بن عمرو حدثنا عبد الجليل بن عطية رفعه قال: أول ما يسأل عنه العبد عن صلاته (١).
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdul Jaleel bin Atiyyah that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: On the Day of Resurrection, the first thing about which a servant will be questioned is his prayer.
Hadith 38736
٣٨٧٣٦ - حدثنا محمد بن بكر عن ابن جريج قال: قلت لعطاء: القنوت في شهر رمضان؟ قال: عمر أول من قنت، قلت: النصف (الآخر) (١) أجمع قال: نعم (٢).
Hazrat Ibn Jurayj says that I asked Hazrat Ata about the ruling of Qunoot in Ramadan. He replied that Hazrat Umar was the first to recite Qunoot in Ramadan. I asked, "In the entire second half?" He said, "Yes."
Hadith 38737
٣٨٧٣٧ - (١) حدثنا ابن إسحاق عن عياض بن دينار مولى ليث عن أبي هريرة سمعته يقول قال: أبو القاسم ﷺ: "أول (زمرة) (٢) يدخلون الجنة من أمتي على صورة (القمر) (٣) ليلة البدر، ثم التي تليها على أشد نجم في السماء (إضاءة) (٤) " (٥).
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The very first group of my Ummah to enter Paradise will have faces as bright as the full moon of the fourteenth night. Then those who enter after them will have faces shining like the stars.
Hadith 38738
٣٨٧٣٨ - حدثنا ابن نمير عن زكريا عن فواس عن عامر عن مسروق عن عائشة عن فاطمة أن النبي ﷺ قال لها: "إنك أول أهل (بيتي) (١) لحوقا بي، ونعم (السلف) (٢) أنا لك" (٣).
It is narrated from Hazrat Fatimah that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me: "You will be the first to join me, and I am the best predecessor for you."
Hadith 38739
٣٨٧٣٩ - حدثنا محمد بن مصعب عن الأوزاعي عن الزهري عن عروة عن عائشة قالت: فوض اللَّه الصلاة أول ما فوضها ركعتين، ثم أتمها للحاضر، وأقرت صلاة السفر على الفريضة (الأولى) (١) (٢).
Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that Allah Almighty first made two rak'ahs obligatory in prayer. Then, for the resident, it was made four rak'ahs, and the prayer during travel was kept as per the first obligation.
Hadith 38740
٣٨٧٤٠ - حدثنا ابن مصعب قال: حدثني الأوزاعي قال: سألت الزهري عن شهادة الغلمان فقال: كان مروان بن الحكم أول من قضى بذلك (١).
Hazrat Awza'i says that I asked Hazrat Zuhri about the testimony of boys, so he replied that Marwan was the first to give a verdict based on the testimony of boys.
Hadith 38741
٣٨٧٤١ - حدثنا الأحمر عن عوف عن الحسن قال: بلغني أن رسول اللَّه ﷺ قال: "الوليمة أول يوم حق، والثاني معروف، والثالث رياء" (١).
It is narrated from Hasan that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The wedding feast (walimah) on the first day is a right, on the second day it is a virtue, and on the third day it is showing off.
Hadith 38742
٣٨٧٤٢ - حدثنا عبد الوهاب بن عطاء عن ابن عون عن محمد قال: أول من أحدث الأذان في الفطر والأضحى (بنو) (١) مروان.
Muhammad says that the Banu Marwan started the call to prayer (adhan) on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
Hadith 38743
٣٨٧٤٣ - وجدت في كتابي: عن سويد بن عمرو عن حماد بن سلمة عن قيس ابن سعد عن طاوس قال: (إن) (١) أول من ثوب في الفجر بلال على عهد أبي بكر، كان إذا قال: حي على الفلاح قال: الصلاة خير من النوم: مرتين (٢).
Hazrat Tawus states that the practice of tasweeb in the Fajr adhan was started by Hazrat Bilal during the era of Hazrat Abu Bakr. After saying "Hayya 'ala al-Falah," he used to say twice, "As-salatu khayrun minan-nawm."

٣٨٧٤٤ - حدثنا ابن (فضيل) (١) عن عمارة بن القعقاع عن أبي صالح عن أبي هريرة (٢).

Hadith 38745
٣٨٧٤٥ - (وأبو معاوية عن الأعمش عن أبي صالح عن أبي هريرة) (١) عن النبي ﷺ قال: "أول زمرة تدخل الجنة من أمتي على صورة القمر ليلة البدر ثم الذين يلونهم على (أشد) (٢) كوكب في السماء (إضاءة) (٣) " (٤).
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The very first group of my Ummah to enter Paradise will have faces shining like the full moon. Then those who come after them will have faces shining like the stars in the sky.
Hadith 38746
٣٨٧٤٦ - حدثنا الفضل حدثنا سفيان حدثنا جعفر عن أبيه أنه كان يستحب أن يقرأ في الركعتين أول ما يقدم: ﴿قُلْ يَاأَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ﴾، و ﴿قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ﴾ في الطواف.
Hazrat Abu Ja'far considered it preferable to recite Surah Al-Kafiroon and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the rak'ahs performed after the initial Tawaf of arrival.
Hadith 38747
٣٨٧٤٧ - حدثنا أسود حدثنا جعفر بن زياد عن هشام (بن حسان) (١) عن ابن سيرين قال: أول من سأل عن البينة شريح، فقالوا: يا أبا أمية أحدثت قال: أحدثتم (فأحدثت) (٢).
Hazrat Ibn Sirin says that the first person to ask about testimony was Shurayh. Someone said to him, "O Abu Umayyah! You have started something new." He replied, "You started something new, so I also started something new."
Hadith 38748
٣٨٧٤٨ - حدثنا ابن إدريس عن ليث عن مجاهد قال: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "أول من يكسى: خليل اللَّه إبراهيم ﵊" (١).
It is narrated from Hazrat Mujahid that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: On the Day of Resurrection, the first to be clothed will be Ibrahim, peace be upon him.
Hadith 38749
٣٨٧٤٩ - حدثنا هشيم عن مطيع عن الشعبي (عن مسروق) (١) قال: قال عمر: لعن اللَّه فلانًا أول من أذن في بيع الخمر.
Hazrat Umar says that may Allah curse the person who first permitted the selling of alcohol.
Hadith 38750
٣٨٧٥٠ - حدثنا ابن نمير حدثنا سفيان عن سلمة بن كهيل عن (أبي الزعراء) (١) عن عبد اللَّه قال: ثم يأذن اللَّه في الشفاعة فيكون أول شفيع يوم القيامة روح القدس جبريل ثم إبراهيم خليل الرحمن ثم موسى ثم يقوم (نبيكم) (٢) ﷺ رابعًا لا ⦗١٨٧⦘ يشفع أحد بعده فيما يشفع (فيه) (٣)، وهو المقام المحمود (٤).
Hazrat Abdullah says that then Allah Almighty will grant permission for intercession. Thus, on the Day of Resurrection, the first intercessor will be Hazrat Jibreel. Then Hazrat Ibrahim Khalil-ur-Rahman, then Hazrat Musa. Then your Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, will stand fourth, and then in whatever matter he intercedes, no one else will intercede in it.
Hadith 38751
٣٨٧٥١ - [حدثنا ابن فضيل عن عطاء عن سعيد بن جبير عن ابن عباس قال: أول من طاف بالبيت: الملائكة] (١) (٢).
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates that the angels were the first to perform the circumambulation (tawaf) of the Kaaba.
Hadith 38752
٣٨٧٥٢ - حدثنا ابن فضيل عن عطاء عن سعيد بن جبير عن ابن عباس قال: أول (ما) (١) خلق اللَّه من شيء القلم ثم خلق النون فكبس الأرض على ظهر النون (٢).
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that Allah Almighty first created the Pen and then the Fish, and spread the earth upon the Fish.
Hadith 38753
٣٨٧٥٣ - حدثنا عبيدة عن داود بن أبي هند عن الشعبي قال: أول ما فرضت الصلاة فرضت ركعتين ركعتين، فلما أتى النبي ﷺ المدينة زاد مع كل ركعتين ركعتين إلا المغرب (١).
Hazrat Sha'bi states that initially two units (rak'ahs) were made obligatory in every prayer. Then, when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah, two units were added to every prayer except Maghrib.
Hadith 38754
٣٨٧٥٤ - حدثنا الفضل حدثنا حشرج بن نباتة قال: حدثني سعيد بن جُمْهان ⦗١٨٨⦘ قلت لسفينة (١): إن بني أمية يزعمون أن الخلافة فيهم، قال: كذب بنو الزرقاء، بل هم ملوك من شر الملوك، وأول الملوك معاوية (٢).
Hazrat Saeed bin Jumhan says that I said to Hazrat Safeena, "The Banu Umayyah think that the caliphate belongs to them!" He replied, "The Banu Zarqa have lied; they are among the harsh kings, and the first king is Hazrat Muawiyah."
Hadith 38755
٣٨٧٥٥ - حدثنا جرير عن (الشيباني عن الشعبي) (١) قال: ساوم عمر (رجلًا) (٢) بفرس فركبه (يشوره) (٣) (فعطب) (٤) فقال للرجل: خذ فرسك، فقال الرجل: لا، قال عمر: اجعل بيني وبينك حكمًا، فقال الرجل: شريح، فتحاكما إليه فقال شريح: يا أمير المؤمنين خذ بما (ابتعت) (٥) أو رد كما أخذت، قال عمر: وهل القضاء إلا على هذا؟ فصيره إلى الكوفة، فبعثه قاضيًا، (قال) (٦): فإنه لأول يوم عرفه (٧).
Hazrat Sha'bi narrates that Hazrat Umar bargained with a man for a horse. To test the horse, he mounted it, and the horse died. He said to the man, "Take your horse back." The man replied, "It is no longer mine." Hazrat Umar said, "Appoint an arbitrator between you and me." The man said, "Let us go to Hazrat Shurayh." Hazrat Shurayh said, "O Leader of the Believers! Take what you have bought, or return it in the condition in which you took it." Hazrat Umar asked, "Will this be the decision?" Then he appointed him as the judge of Kufa. This was the first day he became known.
Hadith 38756
٣٨٧٥٦ - حدثنا أبو أسامة حدثنا سفيان قال: أخبرني واصل (الأحدب) (١) قال: حدثتني (عائذة) (٢) امرأة من (بني) (٣) أسد وأثنى عليها خيرًا، قال: سمعت ⦗١٨٩⦘ عبد اللَّه بن مسعود وهو يوطئ الرجال والنساء -يعني يتخطاهم- ألا أيها الناس من أدرك منكم من (امرأة أو رجل) (٤) فالسمت الأول، السمت الأول، (فإنا) (٥) اليوم على الفطرة (٦).
Hazrat Aizah narrates that I heard Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: O people! Whoever among you meets a woman or a man, should continue walking on the path first. Because today we are upon the religion of nature.
Hadith 38757
٣٨٧٥٧ - حدثنا عفان حدثنا حماد قال: أخبرني الأزرق بن قيس عن يحيى بن يعمر عن رجل من أصحاب النبي ﷺ أن النبي ﷺ قال: "أول ما يحاسب به العبد يوم القيامة صلاته، فإن كان أتمها كتبت له تامة، وإن لم تكن تامة قال: انظروا هل تجدون لعبدي من تطوع فأكملوه بما ضيع (من) (١) فريضته، ثم الزكاة، ثم (تؤخذ) (٢) الأعمال على حسب ذلك" (٣).
A companion narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: On the Day of Judgment, the first thing about which a person will be questioned is the prayer. If the prayer is complete, it is good; if it is not complete, Allah Almighty will say: Look to see if there are any voluntary prayers in his record of deeds. Through the voluntary prayers, the deficiency in the obligatory prayers will be fulfilled. Then the reckoning of zakat will take place. Then the rest of the deeds will be accounted for in the same manner.
Hadith 38758
٣٨٧٥٨ - حدثنا عبد الرحيم وعيسى عن هشام عن ابن سيرين عن أنس قال: أول سلب خمس في الإسلام سلب البراء بن مالك (١).
Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the first spoils for which khums was given in Islam was the spoils of Bara bin Malik.
Hadith 38759
٣٨٧٥٩ - حدثنا عفان حدثنا حماد بن سلمة عن حميد عن أبي الطفيل [عن عبد اللَّه بن عمرو قال: أول من يخرج أهل (مكة من) (١) مكة القردة (٢).
Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the people of Makkah will be the first to drive out the monkeys from Makkah.
