Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was shrouded in three Yemeni garments, and in this (shroud) there was neither a shirt nor a turban. The narrator says that we asked Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that people think the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was shrouded in a cotton sheet? She replied: A cotton sheet was indeed brought, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was not shrouded in it.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was shrouded in three garments: one was the shirt in which he passed away, and the other two were garments of the same kind.

Hazrat Abu Ishaq says that I passed by the gatherings of Banu Abdul Muttalib and I asked them: In how many garments was the Prophet (peace be upon him) shrouded? They replied: In three garments, in which there was neither a shirt, nor a cloak, nor a turban.

Hazrat Ja'far narrates from his father that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was shrouded in two Yemeni garments and one Yemeni sheet. The narrator says that my father had made a bequest to me regarding this.

Hazrat Mansur narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was shrouded in a red-colored sheet and two garments dyed in red color.

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that when the time of Hazrat Siddiq Akbar (may Allah be pleased with him) approached, he said: "In how many garments was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) shrouded?" I replied, "In three Yemeni sheets (garments)." He looked at the clothes he was wearing and said, "Wash this and add two more garments to it." I said, "Shall we buy two new garments for you?" He said, "The living are more deserving of new clothes; surely, this is only for the pus of the dead."

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq said: "In how many garments did you shroud the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" I replied, "In three garments." He said, "Wash these two garments of mine and buy one more garment from the market." I said, "We will prepare a new garment for you." He said, "The living are more deserving of new clothes than the dead. Surely, this shroud is only for the pus and blood of the dead."

Hazrat Qasim narrates from his father that Hazrat Abu Bakr was shrouded in two Yemeni sheets and one soiled sheet which had some yellowishness in it. He instructed that this sheet be washed.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that Hazrat Umar was shrouded in three garments.

Hazrat Umar said that a man should be shrouded in three garments and the limit should not be exceeded; surely Allah Almighty does not like those who exceed the limits.

Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Shroud me in three garments and wrap them around me.

Hazrat Amr bin Haram narrates that Hazrat Jabir bin Zaid was asked, "In how many garments should a deceased person be shrouded?" He replied that Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "In one garment, in three garments, or in five garments (all are permissible)."

Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Shroud me in these two garments—the two garments that he was wearing.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the deceased should be shrouded in three garments: a shirt, a lower garment, and a sheet.

Hazrat Nafi' narrates that when Waqid bin Abdullah passed away, Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar shrouded him in five garments: one shirt, three sheets, and one turban.

Hazrat Hisham bin Urwah narrates from his father that Hazrat Hamza was shrouded in a single cloth.

Hazrat Jabir narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) shrouded Hazrat Hamza in a single cloth, and that cloth was white and had other colors as well.

Hazrat Hisham narrates from his father that Hazrat Safiyyah came on the day of the Battle of Uhud with two cloths so that Hazrat Hamzah bin Abdul Muttalib could be shrouded. He says that one cloth was longer than the other. He says that they found the body of an Ansari companion beside Hazrat Hamzah, so they cast lots between the two, and the one whose name was drawn was given the longer shroud, and the other was shrouded with the remaining cloth.

Hazrat Suwaid narrates that Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq was shrouded in two garments.

Hazrat Suwaid says that both a woman and a man will be shrouded in two garments.

Hazrat Ghaneem bin Qais says that we used to shroud (the deceased) in two, three, or four garments.

Hazrat Abu Usaid narrates that I was present with the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) near the body of Hazrat Hamza. The shroud (which was white and of another color) was pulled towards his head, so his feet became uncovered, and when it was pulled towards his feet, his head became uncovered. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Cover his head with the shroud and place leaves of the Usayd plant on his feet."

Hazrat Jabir bin Zaid says that a cloth should not be tied on the head of the deceased (like a turban).

Hazrat Khabbab bin Al-Arat narrates that we set out with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the way of Allah, seeking Allah’s pleasure; our reward is with Allah. He says, some of us passed away and their reward was not diminished in the least. Among them was Hazrat Mus’ab bin Umair, who participated in the Battle of Uhud and was martyred. We did not find any cloth in which to shroud him except for one piece of cloth. When we covered his head with it, his feet would remain uncovered, and when we covered his feet, his head would remain uncovered. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Cover his head with it and place idhkhir leaves on his feet.” And he says, some of us are such that their fruits are ripening and they are picking them.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abi Bakr narrates from his father that my father advised me in his will that he should be shrouded in three garments which should be wrapped one over the other.

Ibrahim says that a man should be shrouded in three garments: a shirt, a waist-wrapper, and a sheet.

Imam Sha'bi says that a cloth should not be tied on the head of the deceased.

Hazrat Ata says that the deceased should be shrouded in two garments.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin preferred that the deceased be shrouded in a shirt whose lower garment and sleeves are like those of the living.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), son of Hussain, narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was shrouded in three garments, one of which was a Yemeni sheet.

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was wrapped (shrouded) in a Yemeni sheet, and by this, the statement of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), son of Hussain, was affirmed in his presence.

Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was shrouded in three garments, one of which was a Yemeni sheet.

Hazrat Hisham bin Urwah narrated that several companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) were shrouded in a single cloth.

Hazrat Hisham narrates from his father that Hazrat Hamza was shrouded in a single cloth.

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that when the time of death of Hazrat Siddiq Akbar (may Allah be pleased with him) approached, he said: When I die, wash these two garments and shroud me in them, for indeed, living people are more deserving of new clothes.

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that a deceased person, if possible, should not be shrouded in less than three garments.

Hazrat Abu Alia narrates that Hazrat Hamza was shrouded in a single cloth.

Hazrat Suwaid says: Shroud me in two garments.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Qais bin Abadah narrates from his father that his father advised him to shroud him in the sheet made of coarse cloth and to cover his bier with the white cloth in which he used to offer prayers.

Hasan narrates that Hazrat Uthman bin Abi al-As was shrouded in five garments.
