Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Awf bin Malik narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) during the Battle of Tabuk instructed that a traveler may wipe (over socks) for three days and three nights, and a resident for one day and one night.

Hazrat Aflah narrates that Hazrat Abu Ayyub used to instruct others to wipe over their socks, but he himself used to wash his feet. Someone asked him, "You instruct people to wipe over their socks, but you yourself wash your feet?" He replied, "I consider it a concession for you and a sin for myself. I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) instructing to wipe over the socks and also washing his feet, and I too prefer ablution (washing)."

Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to a place where rubbish was thrown. He urinated there. Then I brought water for him, he performed ablution and wiped over his socks.

Hazrat Mughirah bin Shu’bah narrates that I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey. He went to relieve himself. When he finished, I brought a vessel of water to him. He took water from it. He was wearing a cloak with narrow sleeves. He took his arm out from under the cloak and washed his arms and wiped over his feet.

Hazrat Hammam narrates that Hazrat Jarir bin Abdullah urinated, then performed ablution and wiped over his socks. Someone asked him, "Do you do this?" He replied, "When I have seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do this, why should I not do it?" Ibrahim says, "We were amazed at the hadith of Hazrat Jarir because the time of his acceptance of Islam was after the revelation of Surah Ma'idah."

Hazrat Jarir bin Abdullah narrates that after the revelation of Surah Ma'idah, I presented myself before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I saw him wiping over his leather socks.

Hazrat Mughirah bin Shu’bah narrates that I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey. He said, “O Mughirah! Bring a vessel.” I took a vessel and went with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) withdrew to relieve himself. After that, he returned and he was wearing a cloak with narrow sleeves. He tried to take his hand out from it, but due to the narrowness, it was not possible. Then he took his hand out from inside the cloak and performed ablution, then wiped over his socks and offered prayer.

Hazrat Bilal narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over the socks and the shawl.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Buraidah that on the day of the conquest of Makkah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over his socks while performing ablution. Hazrat Umar submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! Today I have seen you do something which you have never done before!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "O Umar! I have done this deliberately."

Ibn Buraidah narrates that the Negus sent the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) two fine black leather socks as a gift. He wore them, then performed ablution and wiped over them.

Hazrat Khuzaimah bin Thabit narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to say that for a traveler, wiping over the socks is permitted for three days and three nights, and for a resident, for one day and one night.

Hazrat Khuzaimah bin Thabit narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fixed the duration of wiping (over socks) for a traveler as three days. If we had asked for more, he would have increased it.

Hazrat Khuzaimah bin Thabit narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prescribed the duration of wiping over the leather socks for a traveler as three days and three nights, and for a resident as one day and one night. If the questioner requested more than this, he would extend this period up to five days.

Hazrat Yahya bin Ubaid narrates that Hazrat Muhammad bin Saad used to perform ablution in a corner. One day, after relieving himself, he came, performed ablution, and wiped over his socks, which greatly surprised us. We asked, "What is this?" He replied, "Our father told us that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do the same."

Hazrat Shurayh narrates that I asked Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about wiping (over socks), so she said: Ask Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) about this, for he knows more about it than I do. I asked Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to command us that a resident may wipe (over socks) for one day and one night, and a traveler for three days and three nights.

Hazrat Dharr narrates that I went to Safwan bin Assal Muradi. He asked, "Why have you come?" I replied, "In search of knowledge." He said, "The angels spread their wings under the feet of the seeker of knowledge." Then he said, "When we were on a journey, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would instruct us not to remove our leather socks for three days except in the state of major impurity (janabah), even if we had relieved ourselves or slept."

Hazrat Bilal narrates that I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the socks worn over the leather socks and over the head covering.

Hazrat Abu Muslim says that once I was with Hazrat Salman. He saw a man taking off his socks to perform ablution, so he said: Wipe over the socks, the scarf, and the forehead. I have seen the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, wiping over the scarf.

Hazrat Abi bin Amarah narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed prayer in his room facing both Qiblahs. I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Can I wipe over my socks?" He replied, "Yes." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! For one day?" He replied, "Yes, and for two days." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! And for two days?" He replied, "Yes, and for three days." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! And for three days?" He replied, "Yes! For as long as you wish."

Hazrat Mughirah bin Shu’bah narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) relieved himself, then performed ablution and wiped over his socks and his head.

Hazrat Salim bin Abdullah narrates that Hazrat Saad bin Abi Waqqas asked Hazrat Umar bin Khattab about wiping over leather socks (khuffain), so Hazrat Umar replied that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to command wiping over the leather socks, provided that they were worn in a state of purity.

Hazrat Umar says that I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the leather socks with water during a journey.

Hazrat Amr bin Umayyah narrates that I saw the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the leather socks.

Hazrat Amr bin Umayyah narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped (performed masah) over the leather socks and the turban.

Hazrat Mughirah bin Shu’bah once said in a sermon: O people! Once, during a journey, I was with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He went to relieve himself. I brought water for him; he performed ablution and wiped over his socks.

Hazrat Mughirah bin Shu’bah narrates that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing a Syrian cloak with narrow sleeves. Because the sleeves were narrow, he took his hands out from underneath. Then he washed his face and hands, then wiped his forehead, and wiped over his turban and leather socks.

Hazrat Abu Bakrah narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prescribed the duration of wiping (over socks) for a traveler as three days and three nights, and for a resident as one day and one night.

Hazrat Yazid bin Wahb narrates that Hazrat Umar sent us a letter regarding wiping over leather socks, in which he stated that the duration for wiping over leather socks is three days and three nights for a traveler and one day and one night for a resident.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Hazrat Umar fixed the duration of wiping over the leather socks as three days and three nights for a traveler, and one day and one night for a resident.

Hazrat Imran bin Muslim says that Nabatah Jufi used to be fearless among us in front of Hazrat Umar. We said to Nabatah Jufi, "Ask Hazrat Umar about the duration of wiping over the leather socks." When Hazrat Umar was asked, he prescribed three days for the traveler and one day and one night for the resident.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When any one of you puts on socks in a state of purity of the feet, then a traveler may wipe over them for three days and a resident for one day.

Ibrahim narrates that Hazrat Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), Hazrat Saad bin Malik, and Hazrat Ibn Masood used to wipe over the leather socks (mash on the khuffain).

Hazrat Sha'bi narrates that I asked Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) about wiping over the leather socks, so he said: Wipe over them.

Ibrahim said that the Companions performed masah (wiping) over the leather socks. If someone, turning away from them, does not perform masah over the leather socks, then this is a satanic act.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that during the Battle of Qadisiyyah, there was a disagreement between me and Hazrat Sa’d regarding wiping over leather socks (khuffs). He said to wipe over the socks, while I refused. When we presented ourselves before Hazrat Umar, Hazrat Sa’d mentioned this matter to him and said that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) denies wiping over the socks. I said, “O Commander of the Faithful! Hazrat Sa’d says to wipe over the socks after breaking wudu.” Hazrat Umar said, “Wipe after breaking wudu, and wipe even after relieving yourself.”

Hazrat Hakam bin A'raj says that I asked Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) about wiping over leather socks (khuffs). He replied that at the place of Jalula, there was a disagreement between me and Hazrat Sa'd regarding wiping over leather socks. Hazrat Sa'd used to say to wipe over the socks, while I used to deny it. When we presented ourselves before Hazrat Umar, I mentioned this matter to him and said that Hazrat Sa'd says to wipe over the socks after breaking wudu. Hazrat Umar said: Wipe over them even after relieving yourself, and wipe over them even after breaking wudu.

Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud used to say regarding wiping over the socks that for a traveler the duration is three days and three nights, and for a resident it is one day and one night.

An Ansari asked Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about wiping over the socks, so he replied that for a traveler the duration is three days, and for a resident it is one day and one night.

Hazrat Amr bin Harith narrates that I was on a journey with Hazrat Ibn Masood. He did not remove his leather socks for three days.

Hazrat Amr bin Harith narrates that I went towards Mada'in with Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud. On the way, he wiped over his leather socks for three days and did not take them off.
