Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 39713 — Reports on the conquest of Makkah

It is narrated from Abu al-Safar that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered Makkah al-Mukarramah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent word to Shaybah bin Uthman (according to the correct view this name is Uthman bin Talhah) to bring the key of the Kaaba. He hesitated. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "Get up and go with him. If he brings the key, well and good; otherwise, lash him on the head." He brought the key. He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned it over in his lap while Shaybah stood there, and Shaybah began to weep. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Here, take this key. Allah Almighty is pleased that it should be with you, in the days of ignorance and in Islam."
