Abu Ubaydah bin Hudhayfah narrates that a man said: I said: I will ask about the account of Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him), while I was in a settlement of Kufah, so that I might be the one who hears it from him directly. So I went to him and said: Do you recognise me? He replied: Yes, you are so-and-so son of so-and-so, and he named him by name. I said: Narrate to me. He said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent, I disliked this more than I had (ever) disliked anything. So I set off until I settled at the farthest part of the Arabs, adjoining Rome. Then I came to dislike that place of mine even more than the first. So I said: I will surely go to this man. If he is a liar, he will not be able to harm me; and if he is truthful, it will become clear to me. 2. So I came to Madinah. The people looked at me with keen attention and began to say: Adi bin Hatim has come. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Adi, accept Islam and you will be safe. I said: I too am a follower of a religion. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I know your religion better than you do. He said: I said: You know my religion even better than I do? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, I know your religion better than you do. I said (again): You know my religion even better than I do? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes. (Then) he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Are you not a Rakusi (a religion between Christianity and Sabianism)? I said: Indeed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Are you not the chief of your people? I said: Indeed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you not take a quarter (of the spoils)? I said: Indeed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is not lawful for you in your religion. Adi said: Inwardly I kept regarding myself as lowly. 3. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Adi bin Hatim, accept Islam and you will be safe. I think, or I suppose, that the only thing preventing you from accepting Islam is that you see the poor around me, and you find the people united and in agreement against us. Have you been to al-Hirah? I said: No, but I know where it is. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The time is near when a woman traveller will set out from al-Hirah, without the protection of anyone, and circumambulate the House of Allah. And the treasures of Kisra bin Hurmuz will surely be opened to you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated this three times. The time is near when a man will search for someone who will accept his zakah from him. 4. And indeed I (Adi) have seen the woman traveller come out from al-Hirah, without the protection of anyone, to circumambulate the House of Allah. And indeed I was among the first horsemen who attacked al-Mada'in. And the third will surely come to pass (as well), for it is the word of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), which he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me.
