It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Waraqah bint Abdullah bin al-Harith al-Ansariyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to go to visit her and used to call her "the martyr". She had collected the Qur'an. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for Badr, she said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): Permit me to go out with you, to treat your wounded and nurse your sick; perhaps Allah will grant me martyrdom. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah will surely grant you martyrdom." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered her to lead the people of her household in prayer, and she had a muezzin. She used to lead the people of her household in prayer, until a slave-girl and a slave of hers, whom she had made mudabbar (to be freed upon her death), attacked her and killed her; this was during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was told that Umm Waraqah had been killed by her slave and slave-girl, so he stood up before the people and said: Umm Waraqah has been attacked and killed by her slave and slave-girl, and they have both fled. Then they were both caught and crucified, and they were the first two people to be crucified in Madinah. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke the truth; he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "Come, let us go and visit the martyr."

It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Waraqah bint Nawfal (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for Badr, I said: O Messenger of Allah! Permit me to go out with you on the expedition, to treat your wounded and nurse your sick; perhaps Allah will grant me martyrdom. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stay in your house, for Allah will surely grant you martyrdom." She used to be called "the martyr", and she had read the Qur'an. She asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to set aside a place in her house in which to pray, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave her permission.
