Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When Fatimah bint Asad bin Hashim, the mother of Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), died, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to her, sat by her head and said: "May Allah have mercy on you, O my mother! You were my mother after my mother. You would feed me to my fill, and you would go without clothing yourself to clothe me, and you would deprive yourself of good things to feed me, seeking thereby the pleasure of Allah and the abode of the Hereafter." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that she be washed three times. When the water mixed with camphor came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) poured it with his own hand. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took off his shirt and clothed her in it, and shrouded her in a cloak over it. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called Usamah bin Zayd, Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, Umar bin al-Khattab and a black slave to dig the grave, and they dug her grave. When they reached the niche (lahd), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dug the niche with his own hand and removed its earth with his own hand. When he had finished, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the grave and lay down in it, then said: "O Allah, who gives life and causes death, and who is Ever-Living and will never die, forgive my mother Fatimah bint Asad, prompt her with her proof, and make her entrance wide for her, by the right of Your Prophet and of the prophets before me, for indeed You are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said four takbirs over her, and he (peace and blessings be upon him), Abbas and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with them) together lowered her into the niche.
