It is narrated that on the day of the Battle of al-Ahzab, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed the women inside one of the fortresses of Madinah. Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) was a generous man, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed him inside along with the women as well and shut the door. Then a Jew came and sat at the door of the fortress. Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Hassan! Go down to this disbeliever and kill him." He said: "I will not put myself in danger against this disbeliever." So I wrapped a cloth around myself, took a stone, went down to him and cut off his head.

Al-Zubayr bin Bakkar said: Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with her) did not cover her head before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), nor before ten of the earliest Muhajirun: her brother Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib; her nephews Ja'far and Ali, the sons of Abu Talib; her son al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam; and Uthman bin Affan, who was the son of her sister's daughter (Uthman's mother was Arwa bint Kurayz, and Arwa's mother was al-Bayda' Umm Hakim bint Abd al-Muttalib); and Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Asad and Abu Sabrah bin Abi Ruhm, who were the sons of her sister Barrah bint Abd al-Muttalib; and Tulayb bin Numayr bin Wahb bin Abd Qusayy, whose mother was Arwa bint Abd al-Muttalib; and the mother of Abdullah and of the poet Abu Ahmad al-A'ma (whose name was Abd bin Jahsh bin Ri'ab bin Ya'mur bin Hubayrah bin Murrah bin Ghanm bin Dudan bin Asad bin Khuzaymah), namely Umaymah bint Abd al-Muttalib. And Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) passed away during the caliphate of Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with her) composed this elegy on the passing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):
"Alas, woe is me! I stayed awake all night like one who has been robbed, like one who has been stripped of everything. Because of the griefs and sorrows that have mounted upon me, would that I had been made to drink the poisoned cup of death instead. When they said that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed into the evening and his appointed death had come upon him. When we came to the house of the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the hair at the back of my head turned white from the intensity of grief. When we saw his (peace and blessings be upon him) houses desolate, with not even a stranger's dwelling left in them. Then a long grief came over me that mingled with my heart, as if it had become my very desire." And she also said:
"Behold! O Messenger of Allah, you were our hope; you were kind to us and were never harsh. Our Prophet was kind and merciful to us; let whoever is weeping today weep for you. By my life, I do not weep for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) because of his death, but because of the turmoil that is to come after you. It is as if, through the loss of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and through love of him, there are brands burned upon my heart. O Fatimah! May the Lord of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) send down mercy upon the grave that has now become an abode in Madinah. I see Hasan, whom you have left an orphan; he weeps and today calls out for his grandfather, who has gone far away. For the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) may my mother, my maternal aunt, my paternal uncle, my own self, all that I have and my family be ransomed. You were patient and conveyed the message truthfully, and you passed away firm in religion, radiant and pure. Had the Lord of the Throne kept you among us, we would have been fortunate, but His decree was bound to be carried out. Upon you be peace and greeting from Allah, and may you be admitted, well pleased, into the everlasting Gardens."

It is narrated that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) came out waving her cloak, saying:
"After you there have been tidings and events; had you witnessed them, the matter would not have become so grave."
