Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with her) composed this elegy on the passing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):
"Alas, woe is me! I stayed awake all night like one who has been robbed, like one who has been stripped of everything. Because of the griefs and sorrows that have mounted upon me, would that I had been made to drink the poisoned cup of death instead. When they said that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed into the evening and his appointed death had come upon him. When we came to the house of the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the hair at the back of my head turned white from the intensity of grief. When we saw his (peace and blessings be upon him) houses desolate, with not even a stranger's dwelling left in them. Then a long grief came over me that mingled with my heart, as if it had become my very desire." And she also said:
"Behold! O Messenger of Allah, you were our hope; you were kind to us and were never harsh. Our Prophet was kind and merciful to us; let whoever is weeping today weep for you. By my life, I do not weep for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) because of his death, but because of the turmoil that is to come after you. It is as if, through the loss of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and through love of him, there are brands burned upon my heart. O Fatimah! May the Lord of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) send down mercy upon the grave that has now become an abode in Madinah. I see Hasan, whom you have left an orphan; he weeps and today calls out for his grandfather, who has gone far away. For the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) may my mother, my maternal aunt, my paternal uncle, my own self, all that I have and my family be ransomed. You were patient and conveyed the message truthfully, and you passed away firm in religion, radiant and pure. Had the Lord of the Throne kept you among us, we would have been fortunate, but His decree was bound to be carried out. Upon you be peace and greeting from Allah, and may you be admitted, well pleased, into the everlasting Gardens."
